My son's interested in the 1874 Sharps repo by Pedersoli and offered by Cabelas in prices rangeing from about $12.00.00 to the 'Quigley' @ $1700.00 plus shipping to my FFL dealer in .45-70 caliber. He is leaning toward either the 'Quigley or the midgrade 'Target Model' Sharps repo @ $1400.00. Are these prices avarage? or can he get a better deal elsewhere?
both the 'Quigley' and the 'Target model come with ajustable rear sights the 'Quigely has a front blade sight and the target model a globe front sight.
My son is interested in mostly target shooting although it is possible that he may use the gun for hunting also.

I can't speak to the prices being good or bad, but sometimes Dixie Gunworks has sales with reduced prices on the Sharps. Pedersoli rear sights run from useless to pretty good. The rear sights are supplied based on what the dealer wants on the rifles they are going to sell. A globe type front sight  would be a good choice if target shooting is intended. If the rifle is going to be used in NRA black powder silhouette matches the maximum weight is 12lb 2oz including iron sights.

Hope this helps.

To quote a line from John Wayne's Alamo, "it do"
Do you think it best that my son buy another Verner or Creedmore or whatever rear sight would be better for target shooting, as well as replace the front sight? as far as getting him to agree to wait for a 'sale' well--- I can try...

You are going to want a vernier "Soule" tang sight. There are several good ones on the market. They can be pricey!!! A hooded front sight with interchangeable inserts is a necessity for target work. Some shooter like to have a front sight with a builtin level so they can compensate for canting the rifle. Again there are many good front sights on the market. If the shooter is serious about competition then get the best sights you can. If in the future you get a better rifle you can always move you sights to the new rifle.

If he's worried about the price tell him to get a Cabela's VISA card and save the Cabela's Bucks and pay for it with them. Mine have paid for 3 pistols, 2 rifles 1/2 a shotgun, a lazer range finder and a night vision riflescope.

I had a 1874 Mil. Carbine in 45/70 by Pedersoli .

CNC machined work of art , great shooter , I orderd it  @ $795 sold it two years and maybe 150 rounds later for $875.
My only complaint .... I sold it  :'( because I was talked out of it.

when planets align...do the deal !
