Eat lots of garlic and avoid bannanas for a few days before and you'll have less troubles with them.  I ain't used any of that stuff in years, of course that layer of smoke thats on me helps.

Of course it helps to have someone else along they like better.  Thats why I made River City John camp so close to me last weekend, I never got bit once. ;D

Skeeters are not too bad here.  You have some around in the evening, but for the most part during the day there are none, unless you get into the woods.  I'll be spraying around the campground to keep most of the bugs down, like ticks.  However, just bring a little DEET or Skin-so-Soft from Avon.  That stuff works pretty good.  OCB may have some rancid bear grease that will do the job as well.  At least it will keep the rancid bears away.

As you all know I don't mind using a sensable modern cheat now and then, and would use a DEET product if I needed it.  But for those who are "HARDCORE' and don't want to do anything not PC, a little coal oil on yer bandanna is one of the Period ways to keep skeeters and buffalo gnats off a person.

In case anyone tries this ya want me to see if I can look up a PC cure for the skin rash it might cause or ya want me to send a few tubes of that Cortizone Cream I have. ;D

A little coal oil on your banana?...Oh, BANDANA!

Guage Rod

44CK, what would an old "soot lord" like you be worried about putting coal oil on your yellow bandanna for.  Just load up them C&B's plumb full of the black propellent, and torch off a round or so.  There should not be any fling leaches left to bother with. ;D ;D

If you shoot the red or blue flavored rounds it will ad lots to the style points (Or is that a deduct?) and cause the flying leaches to die a dyed, death (is that possible)  ??? ::)

I understand why you shoot that old antique propellant now, so as to keep the insect population under control as well as chock off a few range judges and blind the spotters. :o ::) :-X

Speaking of coal oil. As a kid I had the croup pretty bad, as a cure my mom would rub coil oil on my feet! Fortunately no one was smoking when she was doing it. The prescription came from an old lady the family knew named Gram. She was 101 the last year I saw her which was the mid 50's. She recalled traveling west as a child with her parents to homestead land and talked of being scared of Indians who would wander across "their" property (I'll let OCB wiegh in on that comment). Even at my young age I was fascinated by her. Anyway did the coal oil work? Absolutely, I was always better in 72 hours.

I will be prepared as I will have some coal oil for my lamp - and perhaps some DEET stashed away as a backup. I think I'll just keep my bannana covered thank you, oh - that was bandana.

"nuther period correct way to fend of the skeeters would be a heavy coatin' of Period Correct Vasoline.  Just the exposed skin is all that is needed and this means it is not needed on yer bandanna. ::)

If yer doin' a 1880's on up personna bannans is ok if ya got's some money, were a bit rare and expensive, but by the 1890's they was singin' "Yes we have no bannas." ::)

In July of 1835, General Edmund Gaines and his aid Lt. Geroge A. McCall, stopped for the night at Waterloo, Tenn.  They were shown to the best room in the establishment.  (Although they did not know it.)  The room was 12 X 8 with two cots w/o mosquito-nets.  Lt. McCall estimated the number of mosquitos to be approximately "two to very cubic inch."  To alliveate the situation the Lt. offered to fire up a cigar.  The General who was "decidedly averse to the use of tobacco, both phisically and morally;" said "...if you will give me a cigar, I'll try to help you." [From Letters From the Frontiers, by George Archibald McCall]

Everybody should bring cigars.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what blood alcohol level is required to poison the mosquitos? Or at least get them so drunk they can't fly or bite any more?  Has anyone done any pseudo-scientific research on this?  ;D  :D ???   ???   ???

Well we arrived in Paducah yesterday (Saturday).  We toured the Quilt Museum today and Joan wants to go to a couple quilt shops tomorrow because everything except the musum was closed today :(

We hope to leave here around Noon tomorrow which means we should arrive at the range around 5 or 6.   I hope someone is there to show us where our cabin is. :)

We have wireless Internet here at our motel so I hope to check back here.  I sent French Jack a PM.

If anyone wants to get in touch tomorrow I'll post our cell phone number on the members only forum.

Will, I will be there tomorrow to start the set up.  Just got home a bit ago, we mowed and cleaned up around for the crowd.  If by chance you get there and I do not see you, you will be in the cabin that is the last one on the left side of the street.  Your name is taped on the door.  See you tomorrow, and have a pleasant and safe trip.
