First I am not a CAS shooter but soon will be got interested in Mounted shooting which led to cowboy, and research here. So I basically dont have much room to complain, the subject may be old news but this is all new to me. Many moons ago I wanted to take up Cowboy, I was an Army Specialist(E-4) baby on the way and proud owner of a Browning Hipower and a Ruger Blackhawk and Ruger 77 3006. Wanting to try my hand at cowboy shooting I was basically told the Rugers great but you need to go buy another one, and a shotgun and a rifle, basically putting it completley beyond my means. At the range I was told about IDPA and a shooter invited me to his clubs match I asked him what I needed He asked if I had a holster I said yes that was it. gun holster two mags and I was ready to go. So I then got into IDPA. Then later IPSC.  As promotions came and bills decreased CAS is not a financial problem anymore. I still dont have a rifle or shotgun but the wife really likes the Henry "Big boy" which'll kill two birds I get "Present credit" and a cowboy rifle, I recently purchased a 58 Remington, all that's left is shotgun. Granted I am sure cowboy shooters dont want to be IDPA or IPSC but when you shoot rifle or shotgun at those the rifle and shotgun stages are scored seperately.  Just a thought I wonder how many other shooters dont shoot cowboy for the same reason.

Sorry to hear about that. I didnt have a shot gun or gun cart. I mentioned it and had 3 offers of try this one. The range officer after
I shot 5 pistol 5 rifle for him said heres an extra cart. Lots of potential shooters  show up and everyone where  I shoot loans guns and gear. Most want you to buy your own bullets but usually there are extra of those also . The clubs have extra leather.
This is the friendliest most unselfish sport I have ever seen .
If you havent bought any guns yet get a hat and boots and go to a match with your ruger. Talk to people one on one. If you can post a request on the club page  where you plan to shoot the gear will probably be waiting for you , along with some friends you havent met yet.
The question is did you actually go out to a match ? When I was younger pride kept me from asking anything of anyone.
Now most of old farts understand you have to put back what you take out.

The game is what it is.  Two pistols a rifle and a shotgun.  All may or may not be shot on one particular stage.

Sweettooth is quite correct.  There isn't a shooting game where folks will help a new shooter out like Cowboy.  If there is I haven't seen it.

If you want to give it try take what you have and go.

The fun attitude I am finding from cowboy related shooters is kinda what is now attracting my interest, At the time I was pretty involved in BASS a sport where people will lie cheat steal and anything else to get ahead, I also feel awkward asking to borrow equipment. Was just wondering if the multi gun part was a hindrince to growth, IPSC was getting it's but kicked by IDPA because they had aliennated the working class shooter. They will never admit it but the growth of IDPA had alot to do with the small start up cost. Course it can get expensive based on how serious you take it. I notice a Virginia Beach shooter, I moved to Surry and bought my own place to shoot. but when I get off this deployment will be looking up the Virginia shooters. Plus pissing off some IPSC guys when I use a 1858 Remington blackpowder in IPSC. Whats the saying , shoot fast as lightning load a might slow.

Joe4d,
How ya gonna use a '58 Remmie in IPSC? I shoot practical rifle and they occasionally have a pistol stage but it takes as many shots as you need to hit the targets (7-12 hits). For me, that's the DA revolver with 1-3 speed loaders if needed). I have shot nothing but cap&ball in SASS since 1994 so I end up stashing a charged but uncapped 3rd or 4th revolver and then CAP IT as the "reload". Is IPSC gonna let you stash 2-4 revolvers or carry them on your person? If you plan on switching out cylinders they will need to be uncapped for safety reasons: a dropped capped & loaded cylinder is gonna be like a derringer if the gravel hits the nipple and touches off a chamber. I personally would forbid the practice (fumbling with capped cylinders). It is not allowed in SASS shoots. The IPSC boys might not know what to do and give you a pass on it but I advise against it. They might let you haul 3 or 4 fully loaded revolvers up to the firing line and let you do some Josey Wales type gunnery. If they require capping as your "reload" then I'd advise getting Colts since their nipple cutouts on the cylinder are roomier for easier capping in a hurry.

Since I have 14+ guns, I've been called the Imelda Marcos of Cap&Ball. Now, that's a COMPLIMENT!

Joe4d,

My husband had been a long time cowboy shooter, but I didn't care to shoot his rifle and I was trying to find a rifle that I wanted to shoot.  Arcey let me shoot his rifle at a match so I could see if that was what I was looking to buy.  Guess what, it was.  Bought one just like.  CAS is a very friendly sport and when you get back to Virginia Beach you need to get in touch with Arcey and Missiouri Marshal, two of the finest feller there.

Good luck and hope to meet you at a range someday.

Good ta see ya, Sis.

Joe, if you're gonna be in Surry, Wakefield is close enough to call home.  A quick ride on the James River Ferry will get you to West Point.  Same trip and another thirty miles of interstate and you're at Black Creek.

Wakefield is the old Pungo Posse from duh beach.  We relocated when developers squished our range.  There are problems to overcome but the owners of the property are working on it as they can.  Missouri Marshal is working hard to get the CAS part interesting and running smoothly.

The fine folks from Black Creek donated a general store and a jail prop we hope to use week after next if the rain will hold off.

You'll have to come out and watch one first.  Eye and ear protection is required for spectators.  Talk to some of the folks and look over their stuff.

I followed the political fiasco with VB club, then the attempted chesapeake move, I heard about the Wakefield club didnt know it was the same group, But is alot more convienent than Norfolk County Rifle range, Hopefully it'll turn into a great club by the time I get rotated back to VA,  I have put together a Clint Eastwood Pale rider rig with Centerfire conversion cylinders, As mounted shooting requires match provided ammo in .45LC only, So one in the gun two spare reloads for 18 rounds after that like I said shoot as fast as lightning load a might slow, currently I am in and out of HI .IPSC is pretty well established match almost every weekend,

Any chance of changing the name of the topic on this thread ? It just plain bugs me.

Hey Arcey didnt you use some cat grease on one of your remingtons to get the action real smooth ? I know it might help while trying to change cylinders on a running horse.

Good Lawd, Sweettooth!  Don't let Cammy hear ya say CAT grease.........

After damned near gettin' lynched for makin' a mess on the loadin' table with melted Crisco, I started savin' the small wax rings outtah my wife's burnt out votive candles.  Mixed that with Crisco in a pickle jar 'n nuked it.

Ain't changed out the cylinder in the '58 on the run.  But smearin' up the face of the cylinder with that crud keeps everything running well.  Pullin' the cylinder after the rounds are gone is easy.  I'd have to think it wouldn't be difficult in the least to do it on the clock with a bit of practice.  Straight up though, if I was usin' it 'n someone wrote a reload into the stage I'd put a cartridge revolver in my holster 'n leave the '58 in the cart.

That brings up a CAS problem.  The '58s been on loan 'n just returned.  Wanna play with it.  Had it and all the fixins last week but I had to take the clock 'n didn't have the time to fiddle with it.  Just did have enough time after handin' the clock off to load the cartridge stuff 'n get on the line

Next Saturday we'll have staged pistols.  Staged pistols is almost the only time I use the Buntlines.  Ain't had one a those for awhile 'n I wanna shoot the Buntline so I won't be playin' with the '58 cuz I don't wanna be cleanin' six or eight guns Sunday mornin'.

Gas costin' whut it does I've cut to two shoots a month 'n I'll be missin' one of those next month because I've gottah be at a dance recital - Grand Daughter would never forgive me if I wasn't there to see her dance.

Now then, it'll be July 'n hotter'n hell the next time 'n I won't feel like messin' with a cap 'n ball pistol.

Thems are a set of problems.......................

Gotta smile at that one Arcey. Think about us poor folk in the UK who are paying around $7.00 a gallon (US gallon that is)   :'( :'( :'(

wakefiled's close enough I can ride my horse, I went to the 58 rem's because of there perceived versatility with the conversion cylinders guess I could go cartridge or percusion, the cylinders are almost as much as the gun though, when I get somewhere I can actually buy a handgun (currently stationed in HI) thinking about an 1875 Remington clone,  or a 58 with a profesionally installed loading gate cylinder conversion.
