Sorry Slim, but when I say urine it makes me think of hospitals and the strage things the do to a fella they got captured.

Ok one secret the old timers had to prevent heat exhaustion is that not only did they not sit around in the air condioning all week and the go out in the heat one the weekend, but they ate a lot of food with a lot of salt in it. (Read salt pork in this fourum)

Also many recipes in the old cookbooks use more salt than most today.  I think this combined with plenty of water kept many of them from goin' down in the heat, but also many did have heat stroke.  A little molasses mixed in water is sometimes given as a remedy to prevent heat stroke.  I often bake cornbread on a hot day with a lot of lasses in it.  I am told it has some of the same minerals as the sport drinks.

A little lemon juice or a splash of vinegar in yer glass of water will help also, it just seems to refresh a bit more than plain water.  I always keep a blue corked bottle with some good red wine vinegar in it in the cook camp.  I add a bit of this to my water when I drink.  I can't wait till someone who thinks the cook is putting a nip in his cup trys to steal a drink.

Course with the vinegar in yer water if you are hydrating properly folks can honestly say that you are full of ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ;D

...pi$$ and vinegar.  ;)
I like to have 'lasses in my tea in the morning. It makes for a more robust flavor. I do like to put lemon juice in my water, also.

I don't know how I missed this thread when it first came up.
I have shot at the NCOWS Nationals when the temps never got below 90 and were often over 100.  I didn't have any real problems.
I always drink a lot of water at a shoot during hot weather. I agree with Delmonico that cool water is better than cold.  I usually just use a canteen but have used a Jack Daniel's bottle. It gets a bit warm but still keeps you hydrated.  I generally have to "pay the water bill" every other stage.
People don't believe me but I have found that I am cooler when I wear one of my wool vests than a canvas one.  The wool seems to hold the sweat and evaporates slower than the canvas.  I never get the salt stains on the wool vests.

My grandfather wore long johns year around.  he told me that they kept him cool

I haven't found the palm leaf hats to be much cooler than the beaver felt but it might be that mine still has some sizing or something that keeps it from breathing.

Well I reckon I can go to bed now cause I've sure learned some stuff readin this thread.  I shoot in Memphis and Byhalia, MS and man it can get HOT and humid. The range at Byhalia (Rabbit Ridge) is down in a holler so we don't get much of a breeze. Good stuff here that I'm gonna remember for our next hot shoot.

Glad any knowledge I got that way can be a help.  Nothin' 'gainst folks who never had ta work it hunert degree plus heat, but those who ain't often don't know how to safely.  One thing I will say here that I may have forgot is that if you have any kind of medical problems, talk ta the Doc and get the straight poop (sorry Slim ;D) from them first.  Some medical problems and some meds might make this impossible.  But a healthy person, the heat will not hurt if they follow the rules, if not, they will suffer.  I don't mean they will be uncofertable.
