A guy that has been in the business for 50 years taught my how to do leather work. He says only use Neats Foot oil. I no I've read on hear some people think in can ruin leather, but he says NO WAY. (unless you use way way to much) It will give the smoothest finish and last more that One hundred years.  He does the best work I've ever seen and fixes old saddles daily and has showed me the difference in 100 year old saddles. Then I use Fiebings Saddle Lac on things like the holsters. Then he has some Leather finish we spray on with a air paint gun on large things like the saddles.

Thanks, Buffalo. I also learned from an old-timer who used mostly neatsfoot oil. Even with dyed saddles, he finished with a coat of it.

The problem is knowing how to and when to apply it. It is just like anything else to little or to much is not going to work. Most people get impatient and apply to much. They don't understand the basics of leather fibers and how this is affected by any dressing or leather finish. The same applies to dyes and other products.

So true. Amazing what the leather will look like 24 hours after you put some on.
