Okay, I got a batch of .452 Pidgeon Roost Slim 250 grain Big Lube Boolits from a Pard who is leaving the Dark Side. I have a real nice load with my 250 grain RNFPs, the powder, a beeswax wad, a glob of bullet lube and a card wad, the standard Lee double grooves carry enough lube to keep my revolvers working, the 24 inch tube on my '92 runs out of lube in the last foot or so without the grease cookie.
I am ready to try these new bullets with no grease cookie now. Since it is difficult to find Dick's Lutefisk, down here in Texas to use as filler I got a batch of grits, the kind without cheese added. I am pretty sure I don't want the grits with cheese as a fillert
My question is, do I want a card wad in this load? I suspect I do. With the card wad, would it go over the powder and under the grits or over the grits which are on top of the powder?
Next question, I know I can smush the Holy Black til the nose of my soft cast bullets start to deform, how much compression do the grits want? Assuming that there is no wad between the powder and the grits, do I want a lot of compression on the grits or just a little?

I'd throw out the breakfast food and replace it with powder.

Ho the fire,

I'm going to assume that yer loadin' 45 Colt ammo.  You might want to slug your bore.  .452 mite be small and you could get leading.  My 45s prefer .454 lube/sized bullets.

Since blowback has been a problem for some 45 Colt rifles, I'd keep the pressure pretty snappy so as to expand the brass hull and seal the chamber asap.  Also, check yer chamber and make sure that it's not oversize.  Specs on 45 Colt run all over the place.

Then, when you load yer ammo, if you choose to use filler and can't get yer hands on dried lutefisk, grits without cheese will work fine.  You won't need any separation between the powder and grits and none is needed between the grits and the back of the bullet.  Just more bother.  Compress the grits or powder about 1/8" and you will be good to go.  You want enough compression to eliminate the variable that airspace can introduce to your loads.

With that Big Lubetm boolit, make sure the lube canyon is full.  That's all the lube you will need.

Happy shootn'.   Enjoy the smoke.

Howdy,

Think I'll jump in here if'n ya don't mind,  By accident I made a batch of this lube and it works so good I have not changed it.  ( EPP's natural law #18  "if'n it works, stop fixin it") It works real good in .45 Colt Rifles too and no fillers, wads, lube cookies, etc.

My load is 38 to 39 grains of Goex Cowboy by wt.( could be 2F or 3F too) and the .452 Pigeon Roost Slim 250 grain Big Lube Boolits.  The longest I when without cleaning the rifle was 18 Stages at Smoke in the Valley, Aug-Sept 2005. ;D  When I did get around to cleaning it, two wet patches and a couple of dry followed by one soaked in Hoppes No#9 was all I needed.

If yer not a warthog you will have a problems getting the case to seal in the rifle.  If I drop to 35 grains my 73 starts to look like a flintlock from a ways off.

I been using this in my 50-90, 34" Sharps, after 20 or so shots I just push a dry patch through the barrel and keep shootin. This stuff stays moist in the barrel and really works good.

Thanks. I will be getting some .454 250 grain PRS Boolits in June when I go to my niece's wedding real close to Springfield Slim's this June, along with him using my Navy Arms '92 clone as a pattern for one of his butt covers.
Until then, well the price was right. I have had good luck with the Remington dead soft .455 250 grain RNFP over a grease cookie.
I am going to try a batch of full tilt boogie all powder, no filler loads but my CAS club likes the velocities down so the targets don't get too battered, hence the grits. I am too new to this game to be making enemies of the old timers.

Ho Wills Poiint Pete,

Next time ya pay yer match fees at yer local club, put an extra buck in the can and shame 'em into gettin' some targets made of the rite steel alloy.  Full house pistol cal bp loads ought not to chew up targets.  It's the oddball that shoots warthog smokeyless jacketed loads that really tears 'em up.

Also, both Mason and Slim cast their boolits out of the rite metal for SASS shootn'.  It's made to splatter on the targets and it woun't tear up targets at SASS legal velocities.

Be friendly, but if they have cheep targets, get 'em headed the rite way.  Elsewhise you will always have to tippytoe around the ammo issue when it's the targets that are the issue.

Offered in a friendly voice, with a smile. :)

Dont worry much with the blowback in a 92. Mine works as well after 6 stages as it does the 1st stage, even though the action is dirty

I know that I am not hurting the targets, nor would I with full charge loads. Even with all the Holy Black I could stuff in to a .45 Colt case I am still under the SASS max speed. I am convinced that the folks making noise about my loads just react to the BOOM of the real powder. Still, I am new to the club and don't need enemies. I also know that a big can o' grits is cheaper than powder, even the kind with cheese.
I shall load up a box or two of the full charge loads for longer range work but for my home club my old load of 28 grains plus the grease cookie worked fined, I will find out how subsituting grits for grease work.
As far as my rifle getting it's innards all dirty, well, Black does that. After a match I squirt a little moose milk in, wie everything I can reach down. Then every couple of months I take 'er apart and really clean the insides. It helps that I cheated and bought a Navy Arms Stainless clone. Might not be absotively period correct, but then Great Granddad was durned glad to drop the .45-70 for a .30-40 Krag.

Howdy Wills Point Pete,

I'll send ya some Lutefisk filler :o and then your pards in the new club will ferget 'bout their targets and be happy ta let ya use powder fer a filler. ;D ;D

Someday I shall venture up north to see what this Lutefisk is. Until then, I have a batch of Big Lubes loaded up and a match this Saturday. I'll let y'all know how I do.
