Why don't they eliminate THAT!?

SIR WILLIAM

I read (again) where a STORM pard has eliminated that dohickey by the barrel to reduce fouling in their opentop.  This is a common thing to be done.  I wonder WHY the manufacturer/distributor specs don't simply grind it off at the factory?  It makes sense to me.  Your thoughts?

Donno pard. The original didn't have that collar at all, and insofar as I 'cn see it don' serve no purpose.

But I don' think alla them have the collar now. Mine is an ASM that has been around a few years. ASM don' make em no more and I ain' got my hands on one made by anyone else yet to examine.

No.. JW, not that one, the other one.. ;)

The dohicky is a collar/ring, that slides over the cylinder arbor and just fits b'tween the barrel assembly and the cylinder. It's
?apparent? purpose is to prevent fouling from getting on the arbor and tying up the gun. In actuality it seems to do jist the opposite and causes fouling to go right straight into the area and bind the gun up FAST when using BP loads! :-X :-X :-X

SIR WILLIAM

I believe the proper terminology would be the gas ring.  It IS needed for cartridges of smokeless powder. Most have found that by eliminating it,  fouling is reduced and the arbor turns better.  A little grinding works magic.  I do believe ASM was the only manufacturer to build their revolvers with it.

My Uberti's must not have this particular dohickey since I'm not quite sure even from the description what it is. Don't shoot that newfangled smokeless stuff anyhow.
