I was looking for a double barrel and stumbled across a possible deal on an excellent condition 12 G Lefevre/Ithaca 12 G.

Does anyone know anything about them? From the serial number, I believe this one was made in 1935.

Is there anything I should look for specific to this gun? I'm going to see it really soon... any advice about particulars of this gun would be appreciated.

Well, I went out and bought it today. It even came with the original box!

The metal is 99%. There were a few scratches on the stock wood that disappeared when I rubbed it down with Ballistol.

Chambers are 2+3/4, barrels are 26". It is Nitro Proofed. Hammers are internal. It has an ivory bead sight on the front and also near the rear of the barrel.  There is a factory rubber buttplate on it (Ithica logo on it). There is only one trigger. When you pull it, it always shoots the right barrel first. The extractor just extracts, it does not eject. There is a tang safety that goes on automaticlly when you close the action.

It will make a nice Cowboy gun, although if anyone asks, I got it for my wife cuz we have been having bear problems   ::)  I even brought her with me to look at it... Maybe next year when I go to look at a Barrett 50 cal I can mention the possibility of elephant stampede? That could happen... right?  and then there are tigers too. You can't have too big a gun when dealing with tigers.

Anyway, I loaded it up with some 00 Buckshot and took it out back. At about 50 feet, I shot at some gallon plastic milk jugs. My guess is that most or all of the pellets hit the jugs.

I only shot it 4 times... it hurts... alot. I suspect that with 50 grains of 1F and an ounce of birdshot it will be way sweeter. I'll try that in a couple weeks after the novelty of it being "her" bear gun wears off. 8)
