Being somewhat of a wood worker, I love making jewelry boxes etc.  I have thought numerous times about making "presentation boxes" for revolvers etc.  However, the cool formed velvetlinings have posed a problem.  I am sure I can make some thing that would work, but nothing a nice as the formed linings I see on some that you can buy.

Does anyone have any ideas on making these, or even purchasing such?

Thanks,

Steve

If I remember correctly - there's a sort of closed-cell 'foam' that you can press the item into that will hold that particular shape.

It's like styrofoam - but denser.

After doing that - an adhesive for the flat surface should hold the velvet secure as it adapts itself to the item's weight and stretches into the previously-formed impression.

Alternatively - many case inserts are covered cut-outs of the piece 'suspended' by cardboard or thin wood slats that give the needed 'depth'.

Then - there's the classic case as used by Colt in the percussion era - with simple covered dividers.

For certain revolvers - that's what shows them off best.

Good Luck.

I made a box years ago, my pa still has it. I made a form-fitting liner using closed-cell foam, cut out the shapes needed for the pistol / accessories using a knife. Covered with some velvet & held in place with auto upostery spray adhesive. Many of the authentic boxes simply use wood dividers with felt covering.

Closed cell foam is the easiest, and easy to find too. most any hardware store has foam sealant in the calking isle.just shoot it into a plastic bag, and put the gun on top with the lid closed. The old way was to mix up glue and sawdust. [but that takes some time to dry.] DR.

Highlander,

You have a great idea.  I actually have looked for presentation boxes for my husbands badges.  Good luck with all that you work towards.

Another box that is needed for BPCR Shooters is one to store our scopes in. Most all that are used are of the 3/4" tube variety so the length would be the only other defining factor. Many on the market are imports so an American made box for a scope would be just super and I think you'd get some takers! Please keep us posted and I'll be one of the first buyers!
Best regards and good Dadoing!

P.S. A good quality and inexpensive BPCR Shooters Range Box would be another thing to consider. If you need ideas  for more I've got lots, just no way to make them, please feel free to post me off-line anytime for a jaw, I like to help small business people get going!
