I've been enjoying the DVD set of HBO's "Deadwood". By playing with the slow-mo and pause I've been trying to id the guns used in the series.

Of course Wild Bill has a pair of '51 Navies

Seth Bullock is definitely using an 1875 Remington

Calamity Jane has a 7 1/2" SAA

Jack McCall shoots Wild Bill with a 5 1/2" SAA

Al Swearengen has a S&W...looks like an ivory handled Schofield.

Trixie gets a Remington deringer, but I'm not sure what her first gun is.

What guns have you spotted?

Seems I remember the "kids" brother/sister being kilt with a No. 1?? S&W .22. I think Trixie's second pistola was a No. 1 also. A least it looked like a small revolver.

Hi Doc,

It's nice to see that I wasn't the only one checking out the hardware.   ;D

Hey thar BDM,
Ah found the Deadwood DVD set at our local Costco warehouse store. Thought it Christmas all over again. Couldn't get home fast enough to watch it, I'm hooked! I'll try to run it thru my puter and maybe I can pull and print some frames of the shootin' irons.

I'm wrong about that, the first was a pocket pistola (maybe a Remy type), second was a derringer type 4 shot .22 most likely. There is a Colt conversion that sure gets around.  :)

Note: Wrong again!  After watching Dan and Al Trixie's shooter I'm satified it is a S&W No. 1. Something larger than a .22 I would say, judging from the size of Doc's probe .32 or larger.

Note 2: Two strikes! It's not a S&W No. 1 .22 but a-------------------------!

What is it, a Mod. 1 1/2 or Mod 1.2 (2nd edition)? What ever it gets around the set. Trixie hammers Brian Robbinson, Dan hands it off to Al. Next we see it, Trixie like magic turns her single shot derringer into it for Al. Next Cy hands it off to Joanie aand she puts the finish on Flora. Two shots as I recall just to make sure.  :-\  Oh, and Cy has a very special two shot derringer. Watch close, he dosen't even cock it and gets the job done.

Hey Ya'll,
This is gettin' out-of-hand, now I'm Deadwood and takin' notes. Every time I watch I find somethin' new. I've come to the conclusion there was a shortage of fire arms on the set. So far, we have a Colt Richards-Mason conversion showing up in several scenes. I've also noticed Trixie's derringer (single shot, it was a glare on the barrel that made me think it may have 4 barrels) transforms over night on the night stand into a S&W?? Mod. 1 1/2??, it's sure not a .22. You tell me, It has a Birdshead type grip and looks to have a large bore. I have a feeling this is the same gun Dan hand Al after Trixie shoots Brian Robbinson thru the head. The derringer is passed to Trixie by Jule. A close look at Doc Concord's SXS looks to be the same as the one Bullock had back in Montana.

I know I'm enjoying this post. I hope others are too.

Hi again Mike,
I think I have a handle on Trixie shooter #2. Dollars to donuts it's the same shooter Cy and Joanie use to kill the kids (Suffer the Children #8).

Come in from a long trip, and find a great post like this.  Fascinating stuff.  Never before heard of a S&W 1 1/2 .32.

Hey thar ya'll,
Looks like this thread has just about hit the end of the trial and that's fine. It just about wore me out.  ::) ;D  However, I didn't want to leave with ya'll thinkin' I was pickin' the show apart. (I guess I did a just little  :-[)  I really like the show and look forward to the coming season. I've watched the DVD over and over, just can't get enough of it. One thing I've noticed, (if you get chance to see the DVD do so) from the narratives and such is that (believe it or not) the character are played by actors. They are not CAS or re-enactors just damn good actors. They hit there spots and say their lines with great skill. If one of the grips put a salami in their holster and the script says shoot that guy he's shot. I guess for us hardware guys, we expect more. All the ducks in a row you might say.
I'll just finish up with the derringer hand off from Cy to Joanie (well, Cy may have been packn' double)!

Oh, Joanie only shot Flora once, I think (and Cy too?) she was going after Cy with the second shot. I guess we'll never know.
D R

PS: Look for Dan to have a new shooter next season a 1875 Remy!

Hmmmm.....I've just got the first season on DVD and only had the chance to watch through the first four episodes...(when Wild Bill got murdered) so I can't say just what hardware I am seeing right now for the most part..Still just enjoying the show for it is...a Western in a TV and Movie land mostly deviod of "oaters."

From what I recall (and now confirmed by D.R.'s photo) the Flora coup de grace gun was a S&W 1 1/2 SA .32.
