Updated - Lt. F.O. Lombard First Union Soldier to Fire a Spencer

Hi,

After a very long search, I finally found the grave site of Lt. Francis O. Lombard, who according to several authors, was the first Union soldier to fire a Spencer rifle during the Civil war on October 16, 1862, in the vicinity of Cumberland, Northwestern Maryland, and against 9th Virginia Cavalry troops commanded by Colonel W.H.F. Lee, son of General Robert E. Lee.  The following year, Lt. Lombard was killed during a rescue attempt of a wounded Union soldier at New Hope Church, Virginia, during the Mine Run Campaign on November 27, 1863.  His Spencer rifle was lost, and apparently is still unaccounted for to this day.

Lt. F.O. Lombard's grave marker is the one in the center front row.

Located in the distance from Lombard's grave marker is the General A.A. Humphreys Division Monument. The Humphreys Monument was placed on this site at the Fredericksburg National Cemetery in 1908.  The land where Humphreys Division fought a major battle during the Civil War was not available for purchase, so his monument was relocated to the Fredericksburg Cemetery.
