Hi,
Last week while looking at books in a garage sale I found a copy of "Black Range Tales" by James A. McKenna.
It was written by an prospector who came to the Grant Co. NM. area in 1877 and prospected in the area until
about 1920.  It describes life in the mining camps and on the trail, fights with indians,  what the prospectors looked
for in a prospect, and tall tales told by other miners.  It is amazingly well written in a Mark Twain tongue in cheek style.
The book was first published in 1936.  The 1965 reprint contains a 1964 vintage map of ghost towns in NM which identifies
the location of many of the events.  It has recently been reprinted in paperback.  The preface states that most of the events
described can be found in newspapers of the time but that the events may have been exaggerated to make a good tale.
Regards
Colt

Sorry, I should have said something.  I put it on my Christmas list and my daughter got a like new copy for me.

Now it's in my "gotta read it" stack.  (I'm about 270 books behind right now.  So much for "having time when I retire".)
