QuoteI'm faster that way. As far as using flying targets unless the stage is about some hunting flying game scenario it don't fit into the old west.
Well......yes it does, and what a wonderful idea you've come up with, and it is a lot much more authentic then shooting at a bunch of steel targets that don't shoot back!!

Man, I wish I had thought of this, it will revolutionize CAS shootng. And, we have photographic proof that your scenario actually was used in the OLD WEST as shown in the photo below of these hardy French Immigrants out rabbit hunting in 1888, where else but the great state of KANSAS.

Reference; the Time Life series, The Old West, The Pioneers, page 193...., and there are many, many more photos like this one incase you need more evidence if you are challenged at your next match...Again thanks for the great idea

Why do you think the law officers of the day used shotguns when confronted by a mob or multiple outlaws at close range? Because they did a lot of damage & you didn't have to aim with the precision of a rifle or pistol shot.

For those intrigued with what law officers in the old west sometimes had to do, what you are suggesting would seem an appealing stage. Some of us have other interests and quite different stages could really interest us. Hunting for food was a big deal for lots of folks, perhaps one of the common denominators.

Then there were the many "dudes" that went hunting in the old west, English, Russians, Germans, French, etc. Colorado Springs was once well on its way to being "Little London" for well heeled English folk. Remember that Russian Duke A-something or other -- even got S&W to make some revolvers to his specs?

For those of us that like large variety in WAS stages, the old west has lots to chose from.

OCB, Yes you can have a stage designed to be like a hunting expedition with flying, flipping or running rabbits etc. The FDMR had (A) stage like this last year at their annual three-day shoot. (I hit them all) but that was ONE stage out of twelve. Which is ok, but if all or several of the stages require this kind of shooting you will be hurting the new (young) shooters or shooters with no experience with flying or running objects. Buy the way, I didn't think it was fair that the working cowboys didn't have to shoot these moving targets but maybe that's why they shoot in that class! (GAMERS!). Another thing the topic of this post was; What shotgun would be best? It sounded like this person wanted to shoot shotgun & wanted some help selecting one. But some here seem to be discouraging the idea that shotguns are boring & not fun. Thus, this thread has gotten off topic. So to answer the post I really like a model 87' Win. & it's a lot of fun to shoot & way COOL, weather at knockdown targets or moving ones. Best regards, Wild Ben Raymond

Wild Ben,
I like to shoot my shotguns too, they are probably the most fun to shoot. I don't thnk anyone was trying to dicourage  the use of the shotgun, but just to point out that it is not needed to shoot a match as there are other categories that dont require a shotgun....I for one like my shotguns and have several, very old very nice shotguns...
