Just purchased a new 73 carbine in 44-40. The first 50 rds functioned perfectly, then the rifle got to the point that it would not extract the fired case? When loaded rds are cycled, they extract? what do i need to do to correct this?
Thank you

I think a bit more info is needed ,
are you use using BP... reloads ... factory loads ?

The thin case of the 44/40 expands and may hang up as fowled BP builds.
or
44/40 reloads if not re-sized properly can cause your problem so can a hot powder loads expanding the brass.

If your using Factory loads like Black Hills or Ultra I look at the extractor...
in fact I'd look  anyway, just to be sure it is not damaged or in need of a tweek

Howdy, Reelfoot Regulator!

Look at the top of the breech ring.  There should be a small cut-out where the extractor can go into and grab the cartridge rim.  That cut-out should be beveled.  If some grit gets stuck up in there, the extractor won't be able to grab the rim.  Also, see if the extractor itself has broken the tip.  This wouldn't be a normal, run-of-the-mill problem, but if it was a bad part, it also would fail to extract the M/T (empty) case.  I doubt that the fired case could  expand enough to get stuck in the chamber, but maybe ...

Check for grit and the ext. tip first.

You'll LOVE that '73 !

Reelfoot, check the small tab of metal that supports the bottom of the rim on the bolt.  If it breaks off the rifle will do what yours is doing.  The voice of experience.

The tab on the bottom of the bolt does not appear to be broken. This is a new rifle, nothing appears to be wrong, so right now i'm a little lost. May just take it back to Dixie and exchange it for another rifle?

Reelfoot, that may be the best solution, but if its new you could also contact the manufacturer/importer for warranty repair of that problem. I guarentee you they don't want CAS shooters to think they're putting out an inferior product.

Just checking for a update on this thread. I've had a Cimarron '73 for couple years now in 44-40 cal. that extracts OK, but does not want to cycle rounds very well, maybe bind up one out of ten rounds. First thought it was my reloads with blackpowder, but my old standby Henry never has a glich with the same rounds. Then found that Winchester brass works a little better than the thicker 3-D and Remington brass, but still not right. Recently bought a box of factory Cowboy BlacK Hills and a box of 3-D Cowboy and neither one would cycle in the '73 and did fine in my 44-40 Uberti revolvers. Have taken this rifle apart a dozen times to inspect for the problem. Did some polishing on the the extractor, brass lifter, and noticed that the bottom support tab on the bolt seems to shave a bit of the head on the brass when trying to chamber the round and find small bits of brass in the cutout of the barrel relief. Filed a little on the passenger side of the tab that seemed to drag some on the lifter and some on the the bottom of the tab, but didn't want to do to much. This helped some with levering the rounds, but still not good with the thicker brass. Just placed a order for some new Winchester brass and eliminating the 3-D & rem. stuff. Still not completely happy with cycling the rounds on this '73 compared to my smooth operating Henry and don't have much confidence using it in CAS matches. Not sure how explain the problem to a gunsmith without showing him the problem.

Hello pard,
Like you i was at a loss as to the problem with my rifle? I have since sent my rifle to Will Shootem for some action work. Hopefully their wont be any problems when i get the rifle back

I've manually adjusted the extractors on a few 73's, both new repros and originals. Due to manufacturing tolerances, the extractor may not have enough spring force to stay hooked behind the rim. It may work well with loaded rounds because having the bullet in the end makes the cartridge longer and less liable to tip as it is being extracted.

Therefore I would apply one of my pattented, professional "tweaks" to adjust the extractor.
shh...secret stuff.....I use a hammer. Simply tap the end of the extractor to bend it down. The extractor is it's own spring. I've done this operation with the extractor removed from the bolt, but could possibly be performed while installed in the gun, using a flat-faced punch. Personally, I'd take it apart.

Well, that's my take.

Or, perhaps I should have simply offered to buy it at a nice discount. :D

Best luck,

Well, good news on my end. Had ordered a new breech bolt from VTI that already had a extractor installed in the bolt(very reasonable price) and also installed a 3/32" Marbles gold bead front sight with a Marbles full buckhorn rear sight. After the sighting in at 50 yrds last week, I shot a two day match this Sat.& Sun.and had three misses on Sat. and  Sun. being a six stage clean match. ;D using FF goex loads, no cookies no card wads. Slower than a sun dial, but happy with the rifle over all. Have you got your rifle back yet and tried it out? Have also redone the finish on the wood and will post some pic's on the antique finish thread.

Got my rifle back from will shootem. The short stroke kit, action job, and sight work was fantastic, but it still had the extraction problem? He told me that he shot 25-30 rds and no problems? Visually he saw no problems either. also as a result of the problem i was having i boogered up the light wt. carrier. After informing him that i was unhappy, he wantted the rifle back. Will let you know how it plays out
