The painting below depicts a shootout between a well-known New Mexico lawman and his deputies, and a prominent Rancher and one of his employees, both of whom were suspects in a double murder.

The "Kid" was no longer with us at the time of this shootout (unless you buy into the Brushy Bill Roberts and similar stories).  The shootout in question happened about 17 years after Billy's death.

How about Sheriff Pat Garrett of Dona Ana Co. and four deputies who went out to the Lee Ranch to arrest Oliver Lee and James Gilliland for murder.

Garrett received a slight wound and Dep Keraney was killed.  Lee and Gilliland surrendered. Both were Tried but aquited.

Occured July 13, 1898

BB has it pretty much wrapped up.  Lee and Gilliland were suspects in the murder of Albert Fountain and his nine-year old son, Henry.  Neither of the Fountain bodies were ever found, and are presumed to be buried somewhere in the White Sands area.  No one was ever convicted for those murders.
