Howdy,

I have worked with [once] a small production company located in Indiana, that has produced several programs for the History Channel.  The critical thing will be to determine how much money will be necessary to do it with a level of authenticity that we can live with.

I think that a promotional film would be the one to start with.  If we can do it well, it would give us something to show potential backers for a western.  Also, it would help those willing to volunteer an idea of what skills, time and effort are needed.

I would think that an NCOWS promotional program could be filmed in 2 - 3 days.  For that to work,  ALL of the details have to be completed and the key people need to know their parts, whether speaking or not.  This includes the "extras" and the support staff.  A production company like the one that I worked for probably would provide the cameras, operators, director/editor and a coordinator to keep folks ready for the next scene.

The cost will be lower if members are willing to donate their time and pay their expenses for travel and meals and provide thier own wardrobe, firearms and the props needed.

I am in for either project.  Can supply lots of varied props.  If we do a promotional film, please include primitive camping at an event.

Tongue in check right?? ;) ;)
Have you seen this movie or read the reviews? I hope we could do a better job. I don't thnk they are even advertising it in the Chronicle?? Basically what the producers did was take a few hired SASS guns, their top shooters and add a few old timey actors to it and sold it as a western with no historical research at all...we could do better.
Maybe choose a location in south central/western Kansas or Nebraska. I know there are several of us in NCOWS that do the mounted shooting and I've got one horse that will lay down on cue. If we need a cavalry troop we could enlist David Carrico's troop, his group has been in several major films most recently the Missing w/Tommie Lee Jones. So is it doable? I don't know?
Quotealso , for Cost to Shooting Ratio consider  Hi- def digital tape... way cheaper that film from raw stock to edit...
Major231, That would be the way to go to save some bucks.

Del,
By the way I am perceived by some folks in NCOWS, I dont think I have enough pistolas, and it would probably be a real short film ;D ;D.....Besides, Judge Parker hung that guy anyway...so we've already given up the plot..

Howdy NOT Cherokee Bill,

With old Cherokee Bill laid to rest there should be no further confusion about the fact that you are Ottawa Creek Bill!! ;D  You might use your document skills and make a news paper article with your illustration to cary with you in case you run into some Pinks. (Ooooop, now someone will accuse us of plotting together. ::) ::) :o )

Great picture BTW!!

I Wonder if there is a way to get the congress to vote on making a promotional?  Perhaps I should see if I could get my senator to bring it to committee. \

would bet there is someone on the wire who is a senator.  I appreciate all of the great comments from everyone.  Dr Bob, Ol Gabe, O C Bill, Frenchie, Major 231 and Del.  I might be out there but If we want to expose the public to the way the old west really looked or how the things realy were back then, we would have a hard time finding a better way to do it that planing a Documentary or Promotional film.  If that got off the Ground then we could have more folks in the fold to get the word out.  There sure is a lot of untapped, amature and professional tallent.

I guess I should Run a poll to see if there are folks who would be willing to put the efforts into pulling things together.  I will have to give it some thought.

well folks seems i hit the right thread this time .....
I my self is a Motion Picture Technician in the state of texas.
My specialty is set dressing and set continueity.and Props.
When it comes to film i have found most of these "mistakes" are director. orientated. Several times i was told  "no not flashy enough" i like this....WRONG . iincorrect time frame.....
I have done a few westerns and seen  some that have been done corectly  and yes they were heavy on the boring, Be cause common sense usage is not cenimatopical enough
SO Fire arm wise i have not seen a movie that was near correct since the "The last Out law" that was in the 90,s
IMHO
dont tell me mumm you saw me working here
She think I play piano in a cat house

Guage Rod

Knuckels, I be danged If it don't seem like we got more tallent that I can swing a stick at.  I cant hardly throw a dead cat with out hitting someone in this here sport that has movie, savy.  I guess I am about going to have to really look in to this.  I am betting we can get most everything we need here in Iowa.  I know there are a few Industrial type Movie companies around Cedar Rapids and I will be doing some checking on pricing.  I really like the location at Akley, cause that is what I am most familiar with.  I know that the wild west did not have a lot of episodes in Iowa, but the the Range has most everything but timber on it.

It's  got Railway bridges, creeks, hills, small western town, lots of Cattle close by (Watch your Step), a place to set up a Cowboy camp and a lot of hills and far off timber.

I believe we will want to start with a promotional.  If you want to PM me and want to talk more we can.  The main Constrain I will be dealing with will be time.  I have about 3 or 4 balls I am jugling right now.

Dang, I love it when a plan starts comming together.  Of course we dont have a plan on paper yet but there is lots of tallent.  Now we need to know if there's interest.

Vaya Con Dios
