Firing Pin Retaining Pin

I don't know about you guys & gals, but a broken/chipped firing pin is a sourse of frustration.  My 5.5 inch 1875 Remingto had a chipped firing pin that would pierce primers.  I got a hold of VTI and they sent me a replacement firing pin and a retaining pin for it as the original retaining pin was bent all to heck.

The firing pin was a no brainer and fit perfect, but the retainig pin was to small in diameter.  After calling VTI back, they sent me another and I sent the first one back to them.  However, that second was a smaller diameter as well.

I was a small arms repairman while an enlisted man and I wasn't going to let this set me back.  I grabbed a finnishing nail and chucked it in a drill and turned it down with a swiss file until it was a tight fit in that cross through hole in the hammer.

Once I had it at the propper diameter, I cut it to length with a dremmel tool cutting wheel and afixed the firing pin with my home made retaining pin.

Hope this fix helps out someone else.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

Grapeshot ..i have had much of the same experence from ordering parts from VTI and DIXIEGUNWORKS .. if you aren`t a gun smith when ya get `em ya will be when ya get them to fit !  lucky the small parts aren`t expencive , the shipping is uasually higher than the part , i think i`ll start ordering spares when i need one .

I agree on ordering spares. I needed a hand spring so I ordered 3. Still have two as backups.

Marshall .. i didn`t know ya could get just the spring by its self .. glad i didn`t toss the hand i broke the spring on trying to bend it .. Charlie talked me through the second one i got .. it bent with out breaking .. of course i was gonna blame Charlie if`in it had of broke ..the first one didn`t take much bending at all and it snapped .

It's been my experience that what ever part you have spares for will not be the next part to break.... ;D
