I have just begun to load my own BP in 45 colt, but was wanting to know what a good load would be using smokeless, and what bullets, for deer hunting. And do any of you cowboys and girls use your match guns for hunting?
Thanks

Sorry for the double post but it told me the first one didnt work. I guess it did

El Deguello

Some years back I used Carbon 45+P loads in my M94 side eject for deer stalking in the Texas Hill Country.  Took a nice buck at about 75 yards shooting down hill, original iron sights.

I run a 250 gr. Hornaday XTP HP over a max load of Hodgdon's Lil'Gun. I am told, howeve,r that those Yankee Whitetails you have up there are supposed to be considerabke bigger than are deer down here. I would look long and hard at Nosler's 260 grain Partition. I would be surprised if you couldn't push that bullet real close to 1700 fps with Lil'Gun. Start with 19 grains and work your way up to 21 or so. The 21 grain load is supposed to give 30,000 CUP in a handgun. I think the Marlin can be run a little harder than that but I don't know why I would want to. No matter how fast you get a bullet to run, it still won't field dress the critter and pack it out of the woods.
