New .50 Cal. Bullet

I just got off the phone with a custom mould maker who has designed a "new" .50 cal. Spencer bullet that has a large single lube groove. He has made one for a CAS shooter and is sending me some samples. A two hole mould will be $85.00. It weighs 350 gr. I told him I will "wring out" the samples as he can "tweak" the cherry if need be to adjust seating depth, lube groove placement, etc. Also, it has a bona fide crimp groove. He told me that it is approx. 0.340 from the base of the bullet to the crimp groove but he can shorten that if need be. Feedback?

I got the samples today & they are a "bust". They seat too deep & compromise powder capacity.

I'm going to send him some of the great "cut down" Lee bullets as they come from Dakota Widowmaker's mould as that bullet has the right seating depth for 42 - 43 gr. of FFg. It only needs more lube capacity.

Sorry to hear about the mould... I am a firm believe that there should be a "factory" mold that meets our needs.

D.W., the mould maker is sending me some new samples from a mould he made based on an original bullet but with one big lube groove. He said he tried a similar cut down Lee approach but that they wouldn't feed in a customer's Armisport Spencer. Personally, I love your bullet except for two things: in my gun (can't speak for others) it's a frog hair too long & the block actually cams it in the last few thousandths. That's great for accuracy but bad for repeat shots as fouling accumulates there. This may however just be the particular bullets I have tried in MY GUN. Also, it needs a little more lube. Hang in there D.W., I've got a mould maker on job and he's willing to work it out with me. It may have to weigh a little below 350. gr. but then again that would lower the POA which for my gun would be a good thing. Feedback?

Howdy,

On the modified LEE mold, the best results are with the crimp over the last driving band. My 56-50 carbine I sold Judge Hemp when I got the Infantry rifle would feed them crimped in the middle of the driving band. The infantry rifle, however, likes it better if crimped over the driving band.

On my 56-50 carbine, I've crimped in the middle of the driving band, over and at the top of the last grease groove. My rifle doesn't seem to mind where they are crimped. Also, with that bullet and 9.4 grs of Trail Boss I find I'm shooting about 2" high at 25 yards (and just a little to the right). Actually I use the 1.9 Lee scoop which works out to about 9.4 grs. Fills the case nicely, doesn't flatten the primers and gives me good accuracy, considering the lousy trigger pull.

Update: Just received a sample today from the mould maker of what is one sweet .50 cal. bullet! It needs to be but "tweaked" a tad, i.e., deeper lube groove & I think it'll be the bullet to beat. My goal here is to have a .50 cal. bullet that functions, allows one to drop tube 42 - 44 gr. FFg and carry lots of lube for repetitive firing. As a bonus he copied an original bullet albeit with a safe meplat. Hang in there!

i was fortunate to get liberty shooting supplies' mold for the spencer when they went out of business. it is a .512 casting a 340 gr. slug. it too has a single lube groove but not the skirt illustrated. it shoots well enough that i use it also in my 50/70. i cannot tell you anymore about the mold since i think it was a custom build. i haven't seen anytbing like the slug illustrated being used by other spencer shooters. good luck, geo.
