Howdy,  i have a pietta 58 navy i bought new about a year ago. i dont shoot this gun verry much, but lately the action started to bind every now and then. could never realy find any thing wrong. but the base pin was allways hard to pull out. after looking real close i seen that the base pin did not line up perfect with the hole at the rear of the frame. the pin is not bent. i cut down the top of the pin just a bit where it seats in now the pin slieds in and out as it should and now it does not bined. the action is good and smooth how ever one or two cyl. does not index all the way unless you cock the fast. like the hand does not push up far enough. but not on all cyl. whats up? the problem is worse if i use the kirst converter. i did not take any metal off where the cyl. rides. could the hand be worn from when it was bineding? any sugestions? thanks   Pete

If that's a Remington .36 New Army, Police or Navy, whatever they call it, they're noted for bindin'.  Ain't shot mine much either but I charge it with powder 'n ball then pull the cylinder 'n when I lube the chambers I goop up the base pin bore.  No bindin'.

If the pin ain't bent, then it sounds like the frame could be or the base pin bore is a little off.  Maybe that's contributin' to the failure to index 'n lock up proper as it's doin' it with both cylinders yer stickin' in it.  That weren't the case, I'd be thinkin' the ratchet wasn't milled right.

Helped ya a bunch, huh?

All I did was name it 'n get it started. The posse made it great. A debt I can never repay. Thank you, mi amigos.

If you chamfer both ends of the cylinder and stone lightly/ sand and polish the pin it will make a big difference.Chamfering allows more lube in each end and polishing makes a much smoother pin.You don't want to remove any steel from the pin, just polish it.
As Arcey said, they are noted for this binding unless you keep them lathered with lube.Lube the star of the cylinder also. If your not useing lube over the ball I would suggest that you do. I can shoot 6 cylinders before mine starts really binding and that's with Goex fff. Before I chamfered and smoothed the pin I was lucky to get by with one cylinder full.

thanks pards,   one thing i noticed;   i had left the gun siting with the cyl. out of it for a few days. when i put  the cyl. back in, the gun would index fine until it was cocked 8 or 9 times then the indexing prob.  comes back.   weak hand spring?

Have you debured that hand?? If not you need to take it out, smooth up the sides or I should say flatten the sides, smooth up the end and polish it. The hands are a stamped part and they come in rough shape. Smooth it up and bend the spring out just a little more and see what happens.
After you replace all the parts make sure you lube the area where that hand pops up before you replace the cylinder. Then see how it works. One of the reasons these guns sell cheaper than most is because they don't have anyone take the time at the manfacture to smooth and polish the parts. To me that's just fine, I like to tune my own to perfection anyway. ;D
