Is there any difference between Taylors 1873's and Uberti's Cattleman's other than the non CCH hammer on the Taylor?

Virginia Gentleman

Are you talking about the standard Taylor's 1873 SAA with the CC B finish?  I think they look very similar to a standard Uberti, but like CImarron may be finished to a highier level.

Galloway

Has anyone actually held a SAA that said Taylor on it? I'm starting to think they're just a distributor of Ubertis and just advertise for them.

Virginia Gentleman

I will look at the next gun show here in Virginia where Taylor's is based out of.

Got one sittin' right here on the desk.  The hammer is case hardened.  It's identical to other Cattlemen I own with the exception of what's scribbled on the barrel and that reads: 'TAYLORS & CO  WINCHESTER VA'.  What else ya wanna know?

Thanks Arcey, after looking on gunbroker and gunsamerica to no avail I was starting to doubt their existance. Oddly enough in the taylor catalog they dont have CC hammers.

Arcey

My pleasure, sir.

Memory serves, I've had three from Taylor's.  Kept this 7 1/2".  The other two I didn't want after I got 'em.  Nothin' wrong with 'em, just that I wanted sumthin' else so I sold 'em off.  I'm thinkin' the other two had CCH hammers too.  They all came from the same shop that orders from Taylor's when a customer wants a clone.

I have another 7 1/2" that belonged to a late friend.  He lived in West Virginia and to the best of my knowledge he bought it there.  Then again, he and I had a friend in common that worked for Taylor's so I ain't sure how he got it.  It's marked the same way and it, too, has a CCH hammer.

I imagine Taylor's uses stock images for their wish books is all........

One thing I did notice about Taylors and other Ubertis is they don't have fire blued screws like the Cimarron and in some cases can cost more.

Virginia Gentleman

BTW, I did compare them side to side, the Cimarron and the Taylors, and the Cimarron did look like it was finished a bit better.  Taylor's has their office about an hour from my house and I may end up getting one to help support a Virginia company eventhough they are a bit more expensive than Cimarron.

Last August, I spent about 30 minutes at Walker 47 holding an EMF in one hand and A Taylor in the other hand trying to decide which to buy. they were virtually identical. I usually am partial to EMF, but the Taylor grip just felt a little better. Shoots great.
I then got the Taylor engraved 45, and put ivorys from Boones Traders on it and it is about as sweet as they come...

I will have to drive up to Winchester, VA to check them out.  Was the grip altered in some way to make it better?

As for my regular Taylor, no it was completly stock. The Engraved Taylor, I got a set of poly-ivory grips from Boones Traders in Washington, and left it with Bob to fit while I waited my 10 days. He did the rough fitting and I spent a couple of days polishing them with Semichrome Polish. Turned out most excellent.
