Thinking about arranging a bison hunt, and would probably have the hide tanned hair off. Two questions: Who will vegetable tan a bison hide? How does thte leather compare to cowhide for workability?
Thanks for any advice.

A friend had an elk tanned, and when it came back the tannery had cut it in half! so make those inquirys first! DR.

Go to Absaroka Tannery in WY. Joe Brandle does bison all the time. Just do a Google search.

I made a pair of moccassins using the bison leather as the sole.  Moosehide and elk are actually better for that purpose.  It is soft but appears to be more porous than elk, deer, or moose and seems to be less durable over time.

If you get a good hide without holes and nice suede, a jacket would be a nice thing to make.

Personally, if the hide was in good enough shape and could be salted right away, I'd go hair on.

Dogwoman: I'd love a robe, too, but just have a whole lot more call for leather for projects. Interesting that you have found buff leather to be more porous and less durable, but the porosity might have been a reason it had a reputation for flexibility that made it useful for conveyor and drive belts and for suspension for stage coach carriages and such.
