In a few tests I have done with trying to duplicate case colors on small parts like triggers and hammers, I think I have come very close using Kasenit.  Following the directions, I let the part cool after water quenching, then I briefly touched the torch to the steel to relieve it and nice blues, yellows and gold colors formed.  Not as nice as the random patterning of real case colors, but close.  The hardness test revealed the part was still slightly harder than it was before.  Do you think I should anneal it more?

I am going to experiment with Kasenit and my MAPP gas torch and scrap metal this weekend to try to see if I can duplicate case colors a bit better with it.  Most folks I have spoken to say that it looks kind of grayish when taken out of a cold water quench.
