gun case for the 76

Greetings All,

It has been quiet around here for good while now, so being me I figured to open a conversation if ya all don't mind.  without having had a chance in a spell to go shooting or work with new components, what to talk about then? Got to thinking about the trip to and from the range and what the 76 is carried in.  Now I use a very solid Aluminium rifle case I have had for years that is meant to transport rifles for extended trips and bring them home safely.  Use this for most of the transporting of rifles as I am fond of them and a little accessive/complusive taking care of them.  Got me to thinking about other cases.  I found one that was a canvas covered wood case in the spirit of the English type cases but it was designed for a max of 26 inch barrel so the 28 inch was just to long to fit.  Guess one could have a case built but it commands the price of a small house places I have checked.  So the question what do you haul your 76 around in when traveling near or far?!  oh and thanks for starting up a conversation, been a long dry spell!!

About ten or 15 years ago Cimarron sold an Armi-Sport / Chiappa "U.S. Shooting Team Creedmore Sharps" and they came with a canvas lined case.  Those had 34" barrels so they are long enough.  While those are out of production, there were a lot sold so maybe somebody would part with theirs.  I doubt Cimarron has any of those left over but it is possible, worth a call.  I think the quality was just average.  You can see a picture of one here: https://www.opticsplanet.com/cimarron-arms-usa-shooting-team-creedmoor-sharps-rifle-case-for-a-45-70-caseas800.html

Some years ago, I scored a Pelican Protector 1750 Long Case. (50.5 x 13.5 x 5.25")
It will easily hold two or 3 rifles.
Lockable and FAA, airline & Homeland Security certified. It has roller wheels.

I was over the moon when it was given to me

Some Lustrum go I had a pair of really nice Aluminum cases I found at Cabella's.  Held two long guns and two short guns.  One case, everything for a match.  Absolutely perfect.

UNTIL:

Perfect until you went to move it.  No wheels.  When loaded, it weighed a TON!!  Like to gave me a Hernia every time I headed for a match.  Twaz a Happy day when I found some poor victim to present them too.

Now, I realize, this short missive has diddly squat to do with the OP beginning this conversation and actually provides little if any pertinent information.  Oh Well.  It's Saturday Morning (just barely) and I'm bored.  So basically you're sorta stuck with this slightly extended missive of no particular value.  SO:  If you've gotten this far, it's too late 'cause yer HERE!!  Happy Saturday - - Burma Shave!!

I beg to differ sir, your short missive has Everything to do with the beginning of this conversation!!
Just getting a conversation started was main goal here.  Your description of the Aluminum case pegs the one I have exactly.  I rarely carry more than one gun in it due to the weight but one could drive a fair sized farm tractor over the case without hurting anything.  No more than I get to make a range trip it does just fine, but looking for an additional case is just fun like talking about it!! Thanks to all for joining in it is always a highlight of my day to be involved here with all you good folks!!!!!

Well, since discussion is the mater of the thread & in fact the board.
 And lately the board in general has sort of been hibernating. 

I attest to soft cases for my other long guns AKA Milsurps.
 I do have a safe, but have outgrown its meagre 10-gun (?) capacity

One tip, if you do use soft cases choose breathable fabric cases.

The Pelican case is for travel not storage, I used it to tote my HRA Henry to the NCOWS Convention for the show & tell... and I used it to ship my 73 and my Colts to OK-Tom
for NCOWS SW Texas Regional Daluge some years ago. The one during a Hurricane

Unfortunately the interwebs have literally destroyed local shopping. The days of going to a local emporium and browsing and handling and choosing an item are long gone. I would hope Rondesvouz might still have some selections but I have not been to one in 4 lustrum, so I can only speculate upon that venue as well.

I find it rather neat with posts like Prof. Marvel who provides links to places I never ever knew existed, let alone the things that are sold there. This thread was a money spender for me, as I had to get out cases and rifle for pictures to add to this thread (you all know I like pictures) and to find I didn't have a specific case for the Presidio. So off to ebay and 10 minutes later have a vintage case on the way. The above picture of the Presidio with it's new case will be updated in a couple days.
My wife and I go to a Rendezvous every year at Bloody Lake WI. While it's not my period of history I'm really into, they do have some interesting things to look at, and yes they do have muzzle loading rifle cases, lots of them. Never seen anyone with powder for sale tho.

Ah My Good King

The Rondy used to be the place of choice for shopping! In Colorado on the northern Front Range I had 5 or 6 thru the summer and fall wwithin easy 2 or so hours driving distance, culminating in the Fort Lutpon "Frozen Toes" Rondy, which, ironically, was often in the 30-40 degree range due to the pleasant front range winters, until the blizzard season started.

Down here in The Great Southwest rondys are getting fewer and only held during the heat stroke timeframe since the remaining players somehow like to keep their day jobs and interest is fading.
