Ref. 'Still Fighting My .45 Spencer'/ The Fight is over !!!

As I write this I am still grinning. After what seemed an endless uphill battle with my Cimarron .45 Colt Spencer ,it is now as it should have been from the start. When I got it back from it's 2month + vacation, back to Cimarron it was about 85% reliable feeding. After getting Tom at Accurate Molds to make me a custom mold I tested it with 7 dummy rounds a total of 6 times for 42 rds. The noses were getting a bit beat up but I only had one slight 'bobble' and it fed with just a tiny lever jiggle. Today I took it to the range with 'Tom's' bullet loaded cartridges. I ran 5 magazines full thru it without the slightest feeding problem. This was working the lever normally, working it semi slowly, hesitating at the bottom of the stroke etc. No matter how I worked it the feeding was flawless. Not needed was the "working a Spencer with authority, tipping it down to feed or up to eject, holding my mouth a certain way" or any other antics. It just worked like any other quality rifle. To say I am pleased would be an understatement. I am going to try to attach a couple of pix but doubt I will be successful in that.

The bullet profile makes all the difference. Made my .44 Russian chambered carbine a pure pleasure to take to a match. Will be my 'take to' for the Grand Muster this June at Sargent, Nebraska. Nothin' better than a happy shooter, eh Alan?

You are 100% correct about that. I am so thankful that you told how a correct bullet had cured yours! I was at the point of near giving up and now it is a joy to own & shoot.

  My pleasure Sir. For more than 10 years I've been in my own fight with my Armi Sport .44 Russian Spencer carbine imported by Taylor's. Polishing all mating surfaces only lead to a very nice action cycling. Until the magazine was loaded; fully or even partially. At that point I was so disappointed that a trot line weight was not out of the question. This last year I started working with bullet ogive, meplat and overall length from crimp groove to nose. Looking through period ammunition catalogs with line drawings of Spencer small frame carbine .44 centerfire ammunition (essentially .44 Henry Flat),  I started looking for available cast bullets. The first was from an old style Lyman .44-40 mould with a .427 diameter. Accuracy was excellent but, feeding was 'jiggy' at best. That company is gone now, so with the help of my good friend and gunsmith Bryan Buck we went searching the Accurate Moulds site and selected a possible replacement. By gawd Woodrow the choice is a Dasiy! The double cavity mould throws beautiful castings. Lubed and sized for my .427 bore accuracy is outstanding. But even more importantly the Spencer action works perfectly with a full magazine from start to finish. Cat fishing is now out of the question.

HaHa, I know what you mean about a trot line weight ! Sure a big difference between an inadequate bullet and one of the correct shape like the rifle was designed for. I ordered my mold in a 3 cavity aluminum model and love it. The Spencer is indeed a 'Daisy' now !

We "filthy few" who own & operate a well-functioning Spencer can only pity the gray mass of regular, main-stream lever-action shooters...;  They will never know the sensation of euphoria one gets when one's Spencer FINALLY (!) runs through a full magazine of stubbies "slicker than an eel in a bucket of snort"..!
