Division of Indiana After Action Report

The Division of Indiana had our first GAF Muster for 2022 on April 16 and we had 10 shooters. It turned out to be a perfect day after the weatherman had been saying for several days it was going to be cold. It was in the high 40's when we started and was 68 when we ended the Muster. A great day to start in our wool uniforms and still not burn up when we were finished. It was encouraging to have Chuck Luetkemeyer, Sgt Drydock, with us for this Muster. His visit provided Michael Fellows (Snake Oil) the Atlantic Division's Chief of Staff, and myself to ask questions and discuss our proposed Atlantic Division Muster for April 2023. Chuck also assisted me in running the Muster and a muster debrief.

We had 3 skirmish runs planned which were challenging yet not overbearing. We also had a new idea for precision that I came up with which will be discussed later in this Report.

On our first skirmish run had the shooter moving to 4 positions alternating from side to side while forward to engage 3 targets each with one hit for a total of 12 rifle shots. The shooter was then required to grab a bag of ammo to disperse to his buddies n/f move forward crossing small creek. Upon acquiring the first pistol target the shooter dropped the ammo and began shooting 5 pistol targets hidden within the area.

The second skirmish run started at Ft Courage by shooting 3 targets with the pistol through a portal and then moving to a second portal to shoot 4 more. The shooter then retrieved their rifle and began walking down a deserted wooden town addressing 10 rifle targets scattered through the woods, up the ravine and in the creek.

The third skirmish run the shooter came out of a building charging with pistol in hand into an area which had 10 pistol targets scattered and hidden around the areas. The shooter then retrieved their rifle and finished off the 7 rifle targets again hidden in the woods and also up a ravine.

RAPID FIRE PRECISION

The new concept I came up with to challenge our shooters with I have chosen to call, "Rapid Fire Precision Rifle and Pistol". The initial concept is that you are a soldier at your post with an unloaded weapon. You are suddenly attacked by the enemy and you must load and eliminate the attackers before they kill you.  How it works is that the rifle targets are set out at 25 yards and the pistol is at 7 yards. (Might want to set the pistol at 9 yards next time as they were a bit close.) The Range Officer has a timer set for 35 seconds for pistol and 70 seconds for rifle. The shooter lets the RO know they are ready by saying, "Going Hot!" after which the RO then starts the timer which is set to give a beep to start the shooter and one at the end of the time. For the pistol match the shooter starts with pistol in holster and ammo either in their belt or in a pouch like during a normal skirmish run. The shooter must shoot the target duelist, one handed. For the rifle match the shooter starts with rifle at port arms and ammo either in their belt or in a pouch like they used in their skirmish run. The shooter must load and shoot their target within the 70 seconds. If the shooter does not get all their rounds off in time, or if they do not have all of their rounds in the scoring part of the target, they can not win the Precision Match. The targets for Pistol and Rifle are string scored which mean you need to concentrate for score but also be within your time limit. We had some who did not finish the rifle in time as they concentrated too much on precision. Everyone did fine with pistol and we had 3 who got it done with less than 1 second to spare. So it all went well. If you would like to have a copy of our instructions on how we did this unique match, just PM or email me for it. We are still working on them so if you do and have ideas I would want to incorporate them if needed.

Once again I am thankful for everyone who showed up for the Muster as I heard many good comments. Our next scheduled Muster for the Division of Indiana is June 18. Hopefully more of you can come.

I had a friend who volunteered to come and take pictures of this Muster. He brought his camera and also a drone. When he provides me with the pictures on my thumb drive, I will post some here on the Barracks. I saw a few of them on Sunday and they looked great. It will be difficult to not want to pst all of them. The black powder ones are sooooooo cool!

Hopefully everyone had a wonderful Easter and God bless!

I enjoyed it!  Good job Dewayne!  Good fun and good friends.
Go ARMY!  32 years of service.
Retired LTC
Aim Small, Miss Small.

Had a great time.  Wonderful range, good folks.  I had a tree or prop for every rifle shot.  Precision match was fun, challenging, yet well suited to the facility.  Y'all need to come east and try this.

Weapons used were an H&R Trapdoor Officers Model, and a Navy Arms #3 Russian.
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

Niederlander

Sounds like a good time!  Hope to make it some time!
