Does anyone have a repair for an old BP shotgun that never saw a good cleaning?  The barrels are deeply pitted from corrosion and I can't find replacements.  The barrels are fluid steel and all I find are twist.  It is a neat old gun with a lot of character that I would like to continue to use (getting scared of the possibility of a blow-up)

Pard, I dunno how bad them barrels are rusted and not being a gunsmith I ain't making any recommendations. I can only relate  my own experiences. I   have an old 1882 or 1883 Remington hammer double that belonged to my GG Grandfather.OOf course this is a Black powder gun and the bores are really pited from not having been cleaned. A looong time ago when I was a kid and not knowing any better I shot this thing with the most potent smokeless loads I could find including slugs and 00 Buck and never had a problem. Course, now that I've learned to read I won't shoot the thing atall.

I also have an 1887 Winchester that came to me from my Wife's family. The barrels are well pitted. My Father In Law told me that his FAther was addicted to Quail hunting and shot untold numbers of smokeless loads through it and it held up fine.

Now, I wouldn't shoot either of these old guns myself, but it goes to show that in some cases a rough bore will hold up just fine. Course the very next round shot thru either of them might just peel the barrels back like a Bananna.

You can have the barrels lined and shoot 16 Ga in it.

Well sir, I too have shot smokeless shell through this old gun without incident but started thinking of what could happen.  I went to shootin' Pyrodex shells to lower the pressure and again had no problem.  I was thinkin' that it would be smart to line the barrels and make it a 16ga but I can't fine anyone who wants to try the job.  I might could do it myself in a pinch but don't have a lathe handy.  It is a neat old shooter with a lot of character for CAS and I would rather not retire the old girl if I don't have to.

Jailhouse Jim, you could always have a fitted set of conversion tubes put in like I did with one of my skeet guns.

The best in the business is Briley, located at "www.Briley.com"

Their Toll Free is 1-800-331-5718. You could e-mail or call them to see if they can help. They can tube a 12GA for a 20 Ga shell, with extractors.

What they do is require you to send the barrells, they cast a mold and fit their tubes. Its not cheap, their web site shows a 2 barrel tube set now costs $600, but it might just get your old gun back in the game. They can tell you for sure.
