Loop sizes for Mexican type double loop.

I always cut sort of a parallel slot but I've seen some designs with a mild triangle shape to the slot. Is the larger slot so that it is easier to get the pouch thought the loops?  If the fit is too tight and you stretch the loops, they thin out in the middle and don't look so good.
