As an unreformed Cavalry type, and a buddies acquisition of a Krag Rifle has piqued my interest in these firearms I feel the want to obtain one.
The problem is while unaltered rifles are fairly easy to Identify, the carbines not so much
So many rifles have been cut down and sportsterized  It gets confusing.
Could the group tell me is this legit, barrel is 22" which I think is correct, the NRA cutdowns and the like were 24"
If not, what's wrong with it, and could it be "Fixed"
Is it "good enough" for a muster as is?

A real carbine should have a saddle ring on it.  I don't think any legit ones were made without one.

Looks good but what year krag is it, what's the sn and are there 'C's on the rear sight parts? Any readable cartouches? Your handguard is identical to my 1899 school rifle handguard. A school rifle is a carbine in a rifle stock. The early carbines had saddle rings but later ones didn't. Need more photos but I'm sure some experts will show up.

Looks like it says 1899?

The 1899 carbines did NOT have saddle rings.

Does the sight have a small "C" stamped on it anywhere?  Is the front band retained by a spring, or a small stud?  Does the nose of the stock have a square insert to fill the cleaning rod channel?  is the front sight silver soldered on, or is it a 1903 style band?

The above carbine looks legit to me, certianly it is plenty acceptable for GAF usage.  I use two cut down sporterized rifles that I've "remilitarized" to carbine configuration.

Civilize them with a Krag . . .

Plus one on the book.  That one looks legit to me, too, although it's hard to say for sure without looking at it close up.  I use a cut down rifle/carbine for a Rough Rider impression.

Major 2

Looks like a 1901 rear sight and does not seem to use a Springfield clamp on front sight.
If it was School rifle It should be turned down to accept the bayonet...

Looks  legit to me as well
when planets align...do the deal !

Bat 2919

That looks like a liget 1899 carbine carbine to me.  It looks like an exact copy of the 1899 I own to include the sights and fact that it never had a saddle ring.

Learned something new here.  Cool.

They got rid of the saddle ring on the 1899 carbines because they went to using a scabbard instead of the sling and socket method.
