I think everyone that has a 1873 needs one . I have read mine several times . Lots of great things in it .

Got mine in the mail.  Very cool!  On first view, noticed the '73 had no trigger bar safety, or lever safety as most call it.  I had to get out my Pirkle book and look it up to find that this wasn't added until the second model.  Learn something new every day!

Thanks, John!

So I'm reading the catalog and at the bottom of the directions page it says "The gun may be snapped when empty without injury"

What does that mean? Is it saying it is safe to dry fire?

Cliff,
Yes, I believe that is what it means.  Apparently back then, the term "Dry Firing" had not been coined yet.
Did you notice that back then, Winchester suggested the use of "wads" (page 7) for reloading.

I found evidence of what the "wad" was in some very early .44 W.C.F. cartridges I dissected.  It was a .030" thick cardboard disc between the powder and the soft lead bullet to help protect the base of the bullet.

Ammunition manufactured by Winchester was used by Doc Pardee to fire that impressive 30 shot group at 110 yards distant on page 24. ;D

44,
Yes I noticed that about the wads also.

I really enjoy reading the catalog. Thanks for getting it for me. My wife said she would be doing bookwork in the morning and would get a check in the mail.

This being an old topic I looked on line and Cornell Publishing among others has reprints. Of course at a higher price.

I`ve got what I believe to be an original.  How can I authenticate ?

Any word on this catalog. It should be a reproduction but I dont know when...I think. I noticed John's pgoto the binder is rounded and yours is squared off. I have one like yours.

Here looks to be an original that sold for $6,325.00
