I have shot Rem Mod 1858"s for may years and noticed and own two with different grip size--one smaller than the other.
Mine are Italian makes not original which I have not handled. Is one more like original production or is this vaariance an Italian thing??

There is no standardization of grip sizes for the repro Remingtons. In my experience, the Euroarms/Armi San Paulo has the smallest grips, almost akin to the size of the Colt Navy vs the Piettas being larger like the 1860 Army. The Ubertis are in between. The Euro/ASPs are the lightest in weight, the Piettas the heaviest/beefiest. The Ubertis are closest to the originals in shape of the frame/barrel juncture. I've never owned nor handled an ASM Remington in recent memory so I don't know where they fall in comparison to the other 3 makes I have owned.

If memory serves the grips of the Feinwerkbau made Reminton NM 1863 Amies are the largest and close to the size of origianls.
They were produced with the competition shooters in mind and priced at the upper end, ca. double+ of the Italo Remmies.
To the best of my knowledge Feinwerkbau does not make them anymore, however.
If you are lucky you may find one out there in the pre-owned market.

When I shot NSSA pistol competition i had some success shooting a Euroarms 44 1858 with the small grip which i did not like but for some reason it scored well. I also have an old Western arms 36 1858 with a larger grip that is very comfortable to shoot but was never my competition gun. I believe the Western Arms 36 was made by Uberti. Now that I do not have to worry about hitting that X ring at 25yds the 36 will get a lot more use.
Thanks to responders i now know that those little grips are an Italian invention and not like originals (which i hope to handle someday).

If it makes ya feel better I own multiple original Remington Army?s and have worked on many, many more of them........NONE of them had grips the same size and shape.
Yes I know that Single Action grips are all sanded to the frame but I am talking differences like the parts here report about between ASP/Euroarms, Pietta, Uberti and the like.

Yep, the originals were all over the place.  The repro guys just copied whatever they happened to pick up that day.

Despite the dreaded "knuckle knock" of the 1858, I prefer the Piettas.  In my experience over the years, the Kirst Konverters are "drop in" in the Pietta 1858 and 1860, but needed fitment in the Uberti revolvers.

This is due to the current Kirst line only supplying one conversion ring (Pietta sized) and then instructions to user file it to fit the Uberti.
