Interesting "Gunslinger"

A Gunslinger but it has some unique features.

23068 range serial number, normally Gunslinger's would be in the 58xxx range.

Black powder frame, ejector and hammer but square notch rear and wide thick front sight.

Italic barrel address.

Sold as .44 Special but there's no caliber marking anywhere.

The only reason I bring it up is because I don't know if the Gunslinger was officially released at the time when 23000 serial number range guns were being made. This may be a pre-Gunslinger special order.

I have a 50,000 serial number range 38 Special Gunslinger (I hate that name). The barrel is marked "38 Colt and Smith&Wesson Special".  If this were a true Gunslinger (did I mention I hate that name) I would think the barrel marking might more appropriately be "44 Russian and Smith&Wesson Special".

It could be a homemade antique but it has all USA made Pre War features. It would be an expensive gun to do that with. The fact that it's a bp frame with square sights makes me think it has to be a custom ordered gun. I question whether or not it's really .44 Special. My "Custer" .45 has no caliber mark on the barrel since the originals had none. If it was real it sold for a pretty low price @ $1513.

Neat gun.  Thanks for the link.  I'd bet it was a factory special order gun made up just as you see it.
