I have just acquired an 1865 Spencer carbine, M 1865 stamped on top of the barrel near the action, serial number 10873 on the rear of the action. Made by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. Boston. Mass.
No other visible markings on the rifle, no Stabler cutoff, 50 caliber rimfire.
Any history on the rifle would be appreciated.
It has found its way to Australia, possibly by someone coming to one of the Australian goldfields.
There is no family history with it.
Regards,
Al

Hi Morerams,

There is NO historical info on the M-1865 Spencer Carbine; they were not used in the American Civil War.  The M-1865 Spencer was sent/sold overseas and maybe as far as Australia, New Zealand, even Japan, among other countries as well.

Thanks for your reply Two Flints, I take this to mean that the only record of Spencer Rifles are the military records and nothing remains from factory production or sales records.

El Supremo

Hello:

Please look closely at the top tang of the buttplate near the screw hole for a stamped letter and let us know what you find.  Thanks.

Most '65's have one.

Thanks,

No markings on the butt plate, outside or underneath. The barrel has  the serial number, a small 6 or G, an indistinguishable mark with a P beside it, all under the forend and 8 or two circles together that look like an 8 on the left side flat half under the wood. Also a barrel index mark on barrel and action.
