I think that's what I'll have to do. But that small piece is missing.  So I'll have to grind it  back at least 3/8 and weld in a new piece with a hole pre drilled . If I just welded a short piece on it would be hard to drill and be prone to breakage again. I was just hoping to avoid that.

Mwhite I don't know the vintage or maker of your '76.  The only currently made gun being the Uberti, I don't think the tang is sold separately since it is the serialized part.  If an original or a Chaparral, possibly a tang could be found from a junker parts gun?  Good luck

Mine is an original Winchester 1876. If it were a reproduction it would be easy .

You can not replace the lower tang on an 1876 Winchester.  On this model, the lower tang is not a seperate piece.  It is forged as part of the receiver.

Repair weld. Cut back,  square edges & (most important) 45 degree chamfer all around both pieces prior to weld.

Thanks for learning me something!  While I have handled a lot of them I've obviously never owned one.
