.50-95 Twist Rate in Uberti Rifles.

OK. I'm looking at purchasing an Uberti 1876 in .50-95. I can't find what the twist rate of the rifling nor the barrel lengths available. I would prefer the Carbine version but I can live with the Rifle. I am seriously thinking of modifying the buttstock to a shotgun style to lesson the pain that cresent butt plate gives when shot from a sitting or kneeling position. Any Info will be appreciated, thanks.

Hello, and welcome. I can't help you with your question about twist, Dusty or Greyhawk will be along, they are two of the more knowledgeable on that sort of thing. I would like to add that before you go whacking off a chunk of stock, have a gander at gunstock.com. they have an option that can make your curved buttstock to shotgun buttstock. I have 2 of them and love them. Adds a bit of lop, which I needed anyway. And the covers are awesome also, in my humble opinion. Check it out.

Grapeshot, the Uberti '76 rifles are all 28". The first couple years that they were made, Cimarron had a 'smith cut some to 22" but that was quite a while ago now. The carbines are all 22" round barrels. The carbines are 45-75 and 45-60 only.

You could consider putting a carbine buttstock on a rifle, but I don't know how hard it would be to get one.

Twist rate is 48" according to this:

a bit of a query on that Cimmarron chart - the 45/60 is listed there as 20" twist - the latest Uberti advert tells me 40" twist

not gonna affect Grapeshot at all the 50/95 is 48" twist anyplace I looked.

A 50/95 would sure be fun hope he keeps us posted

Slug the bore - make sure you shooting a boolit a couple thou oversize - fillerup with black - put a wad 40 to 60 thou and neat size over the powder - make some smoke

Its an express load - I am guessing you might get 1600Fps out of a 350 grain pill over straight blackpowder - for sure anything you hit with it is gonna lay down and pretend its very dead!

On another forum here kwilliams1876 posted that he was shooting a 430 grain boolit in his 50/95 - said the 48 twist was handling it fine - still not a long boolit I spose eh. Maybe worth checking out when you get going with yours.

My 45/75 seems to like heavier boolits a bit better but it is the tighter 20" twist.

My UBERTI 50-95 Has a 1 in 48" twist. Have been shooting the Ideal 512138 bullet after trying many other weights and styles.
Once we are clear of the winter deep freeze I will play with this load some more as it has shown some real 100 yd promise.

Thanks everybody for your input. When I finally make up my mind, I'll let you know how well it shoots and with what. I'll add pictures as well if I can get photo bucket to cooperate.

Not that it makes any difference, just an interesting note. Original 1876 Winchester rifles and carbines in .50 Express had a 1 in 60" twist rate.

That makes sense of kw's heavier boolit load hey.
430 grain x .50 soft lead over say 85 grains? of Swiss --nothin with fur on it gonna argue much with that I believe
