I was making up some breakfast sausage and I thought - "Hmmm, I wonder if this can of Pam will do well at the range for a quick wipedown of the bore... has gotta be cheaper than Ballistol.  Anyone tried this?

Where is MAKO when we need him? He wrote a long article about the drying properties of oils. E.g; olive oil is "Non-drying", but most vegetable oils are "semi-drying". One time I tried rubbing down a percussin' pistol with vegetable oil and ended up with a gooey/sticky mess!

Try it somewhere non critical first!

I remember reading years ago about PAM being used for something regarding BP guns, but I don't recall just what.

Yeah, I miss Mako.  He used to shoot around here but haven't seen him in ages.

I say try the pam.  Take notes and report back.  FWIW, if you are using DD Big Lube® bullets, you won't need anything more to keep your coal burner running clean and accurate.

By recommendation of Charlie Hahn, after twenty rounds or so I use a squirt of original PAM on my Sharps breech block when it gets sticky. It works, BUT I am not sure if a squirt of Ballistol wouldn't do the same thing. Next time i shoot the Sharps I will try Ballistol instead.
