Could you check serial number 28901.  Thanks

Two Flints

Your serial #28901 -  closest I found was 28895, a Spencer Rifle issued to Company G, 105th Penna Volunteer Infantry in 1865, no day or month listed.

Read my Disclaimer.

Hello, and THANKS, Two Flints:

Got my attention with ANOTHER ONE that probably went to Co. G, 105th PA Vol Infantry!

This is the third RIFLE that likely went to that PA unit LATE in the War.

# 22502 or ones near that number is one, 23415 or near to it at Amoskeag for auction is the second and now 28901/28895.

I am curious if you can please tell me if there are any large groupings of rifles in the serial number range between 22000 and 24000 that show as issued to Massachusetts units, please?

I am trying to determine what ultimately happened to the twice deferred order by MA for 2000 rifles that Marcot discusses.

Many thanks,
El Supremo/Kevin Tinny

Kevin,

Your question - I am curious if you can please tell me if there are any large groupings of rifles in the serial number range between 22000 and 24000 that show as issued to Massachusetts units, please?

My SRS Books do not show any Spencer Rifles in the 2000-24000 range as being issued to Massachusetts.  It is my understanding that the Massachusetts purchase of Spencer Rifles was a private purchase, and as such, those serial #s do not appear in my SRS books.

Thanks, Two Flints, for the helpful clarification.

I guess we may never know those MA private purchase serial numbers.

All the best,

380VI,

Great reminder post ;D  I have that book in my library and never thought to look at it for Massachusetts serial # information.  Your serial #s are correct with the Union soldier named.

The men in the 57th assigned to companies A-I, were issued 1863 Springfield 58 caliber  rifled muskets. Company K was designated as a Sharpshooter Company and was issued Spencer Rifles

Great post . . . very much appreciated!
