I am in the process of adopting my first child with a rampant colt on the left side, a British contract new service in 45 colt. Does a new service qualify as "real" Colt?

Well, the forum is titled "Colt Firearms" not "Colt SAA's" so I'd say you are good!  And we can be pretty sure it wasn't made from Uberti parts, hahaha!   I guess I could talk about my Colt snakes that have appreciated way more in value than similar era SAA's.

Got any pics?

Congrats cpt dan, you found a good one [got a couple myself] [actually too many] but is it a real .45 lc or a drilled /rebated .455 webley caliber? If it's a real long Colt you did super. If it's been altered youl need to find some .454 or .455 dia lead bullets to load in your long colt brass for it to shoot the best, .452s are a tad too small. Here's my last Colt New Service 7.5 inch bbl chambered in .38-40. A real good shooter. Always wanted one with the long bbl. By the way, trigger pulls on these old Colts can be tough but you can swap out the mainspring with an official police or python mainspring. Makes a big difference. Enjoy.

won't know for sure until I have it in hand will post pics once I have it.
I found it on gun broker, reviewed all the pictures and cannot see any caliber marking. the cylinder picks don't look like the cylinder has been modified. the documentation states it is 45 LC..  Time will tell.

Put repro original grips with the scalloped COLT at the tops.  Piece holds better and the scallops make a nice thumb rest.   Still have not shot it.  Pretty obvious that somewhere along the line the Recoil shield was filed to give clearance for the thicker 45 Colt rims and the cylinders bored out to accommodate the longer case.

Took it to the range shooting .452 high tec plated 200 grain SHP with 5 grains AA2 unremarkable groups about 8 inches at 10 yards  the 1917 S&W shot about 1/3 the size group with same load.  Colt may do better with proper .454 bullets. That project will wait until after  winter range as I am quite busy from now to the end of WR

Almost was to trade for one but when I saw I passed.

It was 1942 Commando nice gun in 38 Special sadly it had been nickeled at some point , which reduced the markings as well as pouched the original finish....

His asking price was in the stratosphere too....
