It doesn't appear to be. It looks like a 6" I'll let you know for sure this weekend when I finally pick up the K-38

Back to the Indy Project Gun...

I have seen the barrel band on some of Elmer Kieth's pistols also

can anyone explain the "why" of the barrel band/front sight?

was /is it an expediant for easily mounting a front sight on a chopped barrel?

inquiry minds, blah blah blah.

I can't speak for Elmer, but for me, I just like the looks of it.

I see from the web photos that King's and others offered barrel band front sights on pistols, which apparently originated on
big game and military rifles rifles  ....

I can see they would be he77 for stought, and also offer some further canvas for artistic endevours:

I am currently fussing with a few of these I just picked up, turning them into lightweight shrouds for my Dan Wesson.
A band around the front sight might just be the ticket for a littel "issue" i have...

Those are beautiful! I was really fortunate to discover that surplus Mauser rifle barrel bands are almost exactly [within a few thousandths] of the diameter I needed. So now, next week when i get home, I will start the process of lowering the squared portion cut down to accept a proper looking front sight. Please keep us posted on your progress with the DW!

I finally got it home. If it weren't for the target grips, it would fit nicely in the presentation case.
