whats the difference in 45 colt/ 45 LC

What is the difference between the 45 colt and the 45 LC guns and bullits, I understand the LC is Long colt what im wondering does a 45 colt fit a LC and 45LC fit a 45 colt... Im confused LOL

To the best of my knowledge which is limited at best.  A .45Long Colt and a .45 Colt are the same ammo.  Atleast thats what the grinning sales man at Cabela's told me when I asked him the same question.

They're the same - just different nomenclature, thanks to the advent of the .45 Schofield round as used by the Smith & Wesson Schofield and as issued by the Government.

That round had a shorter overall length, lighter charge and lighter bullet weight as issued.

The issued round - the .45 Colt - was longer and wouldn't fit the shorter cylinders of the Smith & Wessons - hence the names -  '45 'Long' Colt/.45 Colt - .45 'Short' Colt/.45 Smith & Wesson.

There is really no official cartrigde called .45 Long Colt, as it is really just .45 Colt according to SAAMI, but the term persists since it was used to differentiate between the shorter .45 S&W (Schofield) and .45 Colt, hence .45 Long Colt.  Today I think it is used for similar reasons to differentiate between .45 Colt and .45 ACP.  The correct name is still just .45 Colt.

True, it was sometimes called that, but never offically called or headstamped .45 Long Colt, just .45 Colt.  The .45 Scohfield was usually headstamped .45 S&W.

That "Long Colt" designation came out of convenience. It's one of those cases where it's better to be understood than to be right. In years past, if you went into a sporting goods store and asked the clerk for a box of .45 Colt, he'd almost always plunk down a box of .45 ACP, because that was the only .45 ammo he was familiar with. If you asked for ".45 Long" he might understand that you meant the old-fashioned ammo that was longer than the ACP.

Recently the italians made ammunition labeled 450 Short Colt.  The British used a 450 cartridge in the 1880's and I think that the 450 Short Colt was in reality nothing more than the British 450.  Does anybody know if the 450 can be used in either the 45 Schofield or the 45 Colt?
