So far, so good.....

I had recently purchased a new Chiappa (Cimarron) Spencer Carbine, in 45 LC, from Bud's Gun Shop, and it just arrived at the local FFL.  With all the discussions about feeding and extraction problems, I asked Bud's to check it out and cycle a few rounds before shipping it.  I just wanted to avoid the hassle of having to ship it right back if it had issues.  Unfortunately, Bud's said their strict policy was to send factory unopened boxes, so they just strongly recommended me to check the rifle thoroughly before transferring ownership.  So with some nervousness, I went to the local dealer to inspect the rifle.

The Spencer is gorgeous, and I did not see any cosmetic flaws.  I filled the magazine chamber with seven rounds of A-Zoom snap caps.  I was pleasantly surprised when the first six rounds fed and extracted flawlessly, but then the last round did not feed.  We repeated the process a few times and so long as we were  working the action with some authority, it never jammed again.  Dry firing the rifle with the snap caps, I was happy the trigger pull was crisp, and not the 20 pound pull that some have experienced.  The last thing we checked was to be sure the barrel was set tight to the receiver, and it was fine.

The reviews I had been reading were several years old, and perhaps the quality control at Chiappa has since improved.  Of course my trial today was just with plastic snap caps, so we shall see how the rifle does with live ammo.  But right now, I am cautiously optimistic, enough to say "so far, so good....".
