1859 Sharps carbine lock

Hello the Camp.
Any body out there have an idea on replacing the mainspring/sear spring on the lock of an 1859 Sharps carbine without using a lot of bad language.
I removed it easily to thin down the sear spring leg and ease the trigger pull. But to put it back required with the use of two vise grip pliers, both hands and a lot of reference to the deity, a water retention structures and about 30 minutes to get it back in place.
There must be a trick or a tool that I don't have.
HELP!!

I tried one but it either the clamping arm on my antique armory tool is too short or did not grip. The spring has been polished and is so slick the clamp slid off several times. I used a brass pad on the pliers to keep from making scratches on the spring.
After this fight any spring adjustments will be done with the spring fastened on the lock plate Life is too short to use shooting time with that nonsense.
