Gentlemen,  I'd noticed lately that my 1868 Springfield Trapdoor wasn't ejecting quite as enthusiastically as it should.  I took it apart this morning and discovered a broken ejector spring.  What kind of quality control did Springfield Arsenal have?!  I mean, that spring only lasted one hundred forty nine years.  Heads should roll!

The new one is soaking in WD-40 right now to soften the petrified grease it's encased in.  Gotta love S & S having parts for old rifles!

Someone should start an investigation!

"Enthusiastic ejection" is part of the fun of trapdoor shooting. Fun to make the timer operator duck flying brass.

I agree.  That's unacceptable.  I'd send an email... er... call them... er... write a letter immediately.  Hopefully they're not one of those fly by night places and they've already closed up shop.  ;)

I will bet the manufacturer claims they no longer support parts for that particular model as well.  No respect for their loyal customers!!

Better leave a note for your great-great-great-great-great+ grandkids, I suspect the replacement will be just as shoddy . . .
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

My uncle's Springfield had a broken spring in it as well, but his was a 1795 .69 caliber musket. I mean, honestly, how are we supposed to defend the homeland when you can't get at least 200 years out of a spring? We were able to make an Italian spring work with a little effort, so can still enjoy shooting a piece of our family's history. ;D

The new spring is in, and I'm happy to report the enthusiasm is back!

For you, the ejector, or both?
It is far better to remain silent, and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt!

MY enthusiasm for that particular rifle has never wavered, but it's good to see a healthy ejection again!

Let's appoint an independent prosecutor and start a Congressional investigation.  :o :o ;D

Then we'll have to put up with all the leaks to the press.

You might buy another spring so your great-great grandchildren can repair it.  S&S will probably be out of business by then.
