I just never polish it.  It will  never look quite like an original, as they were "Gunmetal", the same bronze concoction as used on muzzle loading cannons. 88% copper, 8-10% tin, and 2-4% zinc.  Brass is about the same % of copper, but the remained is zinc...no tin.
