I've done it.  It is quite "snug" at the case rim.  Some actually rubbed but just fit.  I was at one time a "Doubting Thomas" at one time as I just didn't think the cartridge rims would go.  Measurements said ....... maybe.  Then won of my long term Open Top customers stopped by with a pair of 44 Special Open Top cylinders and plied me with my favorite lubrication.  So I gave the Company Line (Caveat) if it didn't work, it's not my fault.

I cut the chambers with a piloted chambering reamer and took special care with the chamber alignment.  Dam'd if it didn't work.  Snug, but it worked.  44-40 Open Top.

Now I have another Caveat.  I have NEVER thought chambering an Open Top for 45 Colt was a good idea.  I've always felt the chamber walls were too thin.  Never mind Uberti Proofed em for SAAMI 45 Colt.  Never mind my first Open Tops were/are 45 Schofield.  I worked on all too many 45 Open Tops that spit the little piece of metal at the bottom of the locking bolt slots out into the boonies.  Understand, they work just fine with or without that little piece of metal, but just one hot loaded cartridge and the cylinder may well POP.  That is NOT FUN.

I feel the same way about rechambering to 44-40.  Even though I got talked into doing it, the finished chamber walls give me the chills.  I have every confidence Springfield Slim and my customer will behave.  The next owner may not.  Soap Box Mode >> OFF
