Doctor Bill

I am considering making a BP order and I noticed that Powder Inc. has a very good price on Skirmish FFg powder.  Does anyone have any experience with this stuff?  How does it compare to other brands?  So far I have used Elephant and Graff and Sons house brand so that is my base for comparison.

Thanks

this was posted by Dakota Widowmaker, concerning skirmish powder a while back,  someone may have more information now.

I just found out why its so cheap.

Its not for using with cap-n-ball or large bullet cartridges. Its for blanks!!!

Lots of smoke and flash, but, not the burn rates and power that GOEX or Pyrodex have.

Looks like I'll just spend the extra $20 and get the "good stuff".
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

I suppose it could be re-screened, but is it worth the bother?

That's what I needed to know.  Thanks folks.  May have just saved me a bunch of $$$.

On the other hand, if I had say, 50 pounds of that stuff I would need something to shoot it in and cannons will digest just about anything. . . . ;D

Locally we use the Skirmish Fg for shotguns. Has a slower burn rate resulting in less punch on both ends of the shotgun. It seems to be quite a bit dirtier than GOEX and KIK but works fine for cowboy. Some are using the finer grade but I have no experience with that.

I'd give the stuff a go in my 10ga.  With the 3-1/2" hulls there's plenty of room in there.  While Cowboy matches don't put a premium on power, I'd use something better for upland hunting.  Skirmish is made for blanks.  Skirmish makes great sparks.  Quite a show.

Ha! That DD. A true thinking man. Skirmish makes great sparks.

The sparks are powder that is burning long after firing. Hence the weak performance of the stuff. It does give a show for sure. Try it after dark. It is fun to play with, but for any kind of accuracy or power, there are other brands that do a whole lot better. Accuracy and power, or fun and exhibitionism. Hmmmm.   ;)

Real Black Powder is powerful, easy to use, is accurate, has real tight standard deviation numbers, smells good...
Sure, you need to clean your guns after use.  It's not that difficult, the solvents are cheap. It is a fast routine one you get past the mental block that it's soooo messsy and diffficult.  Be authentic, use the real thing, leave the fake stuff to the scoped synthetic sabot shooters.

Ok, Ive had it. Just as soon as I pay on my Cabelas card, 25 lbs of Goex powder is first priority.

Now, which one?

You may want to pass that deal on to any friends who participate in mounted shoots or fast draw.  Their blank ammo is usualy provided to them at the match, but for practice at home, that'd be the way ta go.

Doctor Bill, I was wrong on the Open Range post saying Skirmish is a Chinese powder after I learned from Jerry it is bagged Goex fire cracker powder repackaged in old Clear Shot cans.  Experience with it?  About 25 or 30 pounds used for my shot shells so far.  You like smoke?  Buy some cause it goes Boom too!
