We got one of these at an auction last Saturday. Retail was $2495.00, our high bid was $1400.

A man at the auction asked me, "Are you going to shoot that?"  "Yes, I am."  It's already only worth half it's original value. So today I went to clean the barrel, as I always do before I fire a new weapon.  The bore was caked with rust. I suppose America Remembers, the company that finished it, figured it would never be fired or even the action cycled, and didn't bother to clean the bore after they laid down the deep, high polished blue. So now it's on my bench, the bore soaking in Ballistol. When I get that clean I'm going to check the mag tube, as it is probably in the same condition. Can't wait to whip this baby out at a match this summer.

Now I have a shiny bore and am just getting rust tinted patches. Looking good.

Howdy Kid,

Is the bore pitted?  Sure looks like a welcome addition to your gun rack.

No pitting, looks new. I emphasize the importance of cleaning the bores on new guns or barrels. I've built a few AR's and the "new" barrels are filthy, with chips from machining to just dirt and oil.  I also cleaned a new 1886 Browning and an 1895 Marlin and both were dirty. Glad I didn't try to fire any of these before cleaning.  I always clean Italian C&B revolver barrels first thing out of the box, as if you burn in that oil that comes on them you'll never get it out.

Good information.

No new or used gun should be taken to the range before a good cleaning.  Your example only helps.

Clean boys, Clean em!

I don't know how many different firearms I saw when I was working as a range officer at my gun club that were brand new and just bought then brought to the range and shot. Many of them were ARs and the owner wondered why it would "jam". They were very surprised when I would suggest to them the go home and clean the gun. And, I have helped new gun owners clean their guns at their shooting bench.

Amazing!

Always felt, and still do that cleaning (even detailed if possible) helps the owner familiarize him/her with their new firearm.  I have seen 'out-of-the-box' shooting as recently as last week also.   :o

When I shoot on Saturday I clean brass and guns Sunday whether I shoot real Gun Powder (What DuPont calls it) or that nitro stuff (ew)
The guns get cleaned period. About twice a year I do a complete break (ordinance strip) down and clean everything. I sometimes have  a brain lapse and shoot the targets incorrect order but my guns always go BANG.
It bothers me that people brag about never cleaning their guns and I think that is just slovenly, lazy, and a stupid waste of the money spent on them.

After shooting any of my firearms I take 'em all he way down.  Mostly because it keeps me in the garage and out of the better half's hair.  Suppose that's why she's always sending me to the range.  "Shoot black powder?"  She knows this keeps me in the garage longer except when I'm reloading.   ::)
