Hello SSS,

This may have been posted long ago, but it was sent to me by SSS member Lonesome Henry (Andreas) from Germany . . .

Interesting! This one shows the warrior with a Spencer rifle. There is another shown in Vol. 1 of "International Armament," which pictures a Pawnee shooting a Spencer carbine. These were members of Frank and Luther North's Pawnee Scouts.
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

I know this is an old post but I just came across it and was wondering if you can give me any additional info on this picture. I actually have an original CDV of this Pawnee scout taken by Jackson Bros of Omaha, Nebraska.  I can't quite make out his name - looks like
Ja-Ka-Hah - but the penciling is so light that it is difficult to read.  Believe he was one of Frank North's pawnee scouts who were issued Spencer rifles.

Americana,

I went through my book, "The Fighting Norths and Pawnee Scouts," but could not find any Pawnee names similar to the one you mentioned. If you would like, send me a photo of the wording that you cannot read.  My Email address is fsgrand2@fairpoint.net.

Thank you for the quick response.  Take a look at the following page wwwamericana.com/Pawnee-Indian-Scout.html and let me know what you think. I believe the penciled name is Ja-Ka-Wah.

Best I could do.  Worked on Pawnee name with various programs I have. Really faded to begin with . . . not much printed contrast.

You might try contacting one of the Pawnee Indian Associations.  Send them a copy of your original photo and maybe they can help with the name.
