So, How does a neophyte, or anyone else tell the difference between Chrome tanned and Vegetable leather??

I have built a brandy new set of Snubbie Cap Guns.  I didn't plan it that way.  I didn't think about it, but left a pair of guns in a carrier
(looks like two Cavalry Holsters back to back) over an entire 3 day match.  got home and the ends of the barrels were toast.
Needless, I were/not a happy camper.  I'd not used the carriers more than one day in the past.  Now I don't know that I'm going to
use them at all.  Maybe.

Is there a way to tell Chrome from Veg??  Don't want to make the same mistake twice.

The easiest  way is smell, Veg. Tan has that rich sweet aroma you associate with leather.
also it will spot or soak with a few drops of water.

Chrome tan is waxier , water resistant and has a chemical like smell.

when planets align...do the deal !

Chrome tanned leather was used a lot for money belts in the day, but you didn't want bullet loops on these belts, chrome tanned leather will eat into the brass casings and cause them to degrade...as a money belt they wore like iron and were weather resistant...Most leather outlets can tell you which is what in regards to types of tanning, always ask before buying...
