On top of everything else, I've decided to look for a Schofield repro in .45 Colt. Who makes the best one currently?

The only one being made now is Uberti.  There tends to be a fairly long backorder list for new ones, as they only make a few hundred a year.  You might find used ASM schofields but those should be avoided.  Lots of quality problems.

Thanks guys - having had some experience with ASMs, I will start looking for a Uberti. I need something new to play with !!

T4T !!  Hey Bub!!

Actually you have several choices.  Barrel length that is   :o  Ok, sometimes I'm a smart a..  :P  My only real applicable question/suggestion is to ask your choice of propellant??  Uberti reproductions of the Schofield don't play real well with BP.

PS:  I don't really understand your trepidation's about ASM Schofields.  They make dandy Goose Decoy anchors  :D

This is the one I did the Gun review for the NCOWS ''Shootist"
not a Schofield... never the less a #3 ...  It has not seen BP, I got plenty of other BP launchers  ;)

This one has been a joy   :D out of the box

I shoot mostly smokeless these days..... Black powder once or twice a month, so that shouldn't be an issue. I'm looking for reliability and properly hardened parts basically.

PS Coffin - the Henry transition is still turning heads everytime I bring it. Latest project is a Colt lightning revolver, I suppose I should be posting about that. :-) you wouldn't happen to have a source for a 38 LC hand, would you ?

When looking at a Uberti, you really need to scrutinize it. The one I had acquired was an abomination on non functioning parts. Cylinder chambers where way off from bore center line, interrupted hammer falls, star ejector binding, soft screws, forcing cone not cut axially, muzzle crown off to one side, etc. I just have a hard time with repro's being of this quality in the 21st century and cnc machines are now the norm. This pistols now cost way more than the Colt pythons when new. Every Uberti rifle/pistol I have has had to be reworked to some degree. My Schofield was a sorry example.  I wish they would sell kits with over sized parts that most of us could assemble into something approaching the quality of the originals.
good luck

Thanks guys, for all the know-how and advice. When I get one, I'll post it up on here.

On the off-chance that you might want a 3.5" barreled model, I know where some new ones are.  That model isn't as popular as 5" and 7", thus the availability.

Kid, I have 2 original New Model number 3s that I often shoot in matches. I have no problem cleaning them. Lift the latch, unscrew the cylinder, drop it in hot water and then run a bore snake down the barrel, then the cylinder. Pretty much done except for the lubing.

Abilene - A 3.5 inch barreled Schofield? That could be kind of cool.....45 LC ? Hmmmm.

T45t ( formerly known as t4t ) :D

Why 45? Cuz they don't make 46s !

Abilene

I think they call the 3.5 in. the Sheriff's model, and the 5" is called the Wells Fargo.

It was on sale at Winter Range for $899.  One guy who had a 5" and 7" Schofields bought one so he could have the whole set  :)

I have a friend in Virginia who shoots the 3.5 inch Schofields in Classic Cowboy.  that turkey can really shoot.  Some kind of fast.  His
"Snubbie" Schofields are way KOOL!!

Howdy

I have no problem cleaning my New Model #3 after shooting it with Black Powder. It's just different than cleaning a Colt. One nice thing about cleaning a Top Break is you can run a cleaning rod through the barrel from the rear.

That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

I have a Uberti Schofield and it is a fine weapon.

I actually had one 5 years ago that had had a cylinder that was binding since I bought it.  You'd put a few rounds in it and it would start binding.   Sent it back to Uberti, they "fixed it" and sent it back.  Same problem.   Sent it back.  They sent me a brand new Schofield to replace it.  The new one had a slightly different hammer and additional patent markings.   NICE gun.

I carry it either in an 1880 Cavalry flap holster or a John Wesley Hardin crossdraw holster on a Rio Grande gunbelt.   Love it.
